Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED:
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

TIME ESTIMATE: 40 minutes

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Hard Disk

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

The operating system should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement.
e.g. The disk may be part of Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas Volume Manager, mounted file-system, raw partitions, etc.
A data backup may be required to restore data onto a replaced disk. If a data backup is not required it is still a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED:

Removing a Hard Drive

If you are removing a hard drive while the operating system is still running, you must remove the drive logically from the operating system before physically removing it from the server.

Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge

1. Unconfigure the hard drive that you intend to remove. e.g.

# cfgadm -la

# cfgadm -c unconfigure c1::dsk/c1t1d0

2 .Verify that the device is now unconfigured. e.g.

# cfgadm -la

3. Confirm that the hard drive you want to remove from the server is no longer visible to the operating system. e.g.

# format

4. Ensure that the server is properly grounded.

5. Grip the bezel at the two finger holds and rotate it down to open

6.Check that the blue indicator LED is lit on the hard drive.
The blue LED comes on when the hard drive is ready to remove.

7. Slide the catch at the front of the hard drive to the right

8. Pull the handle and remove the hard drive from the server by sliding it out from its bay.

Installing a Hard Drive

1. Slide the catch on the front of the hard drive to the right

2. Slide the hard drive into its bay at the front of the server.

3. Push the metal lever until the drive clicks into place.

4. Close the bezel.

5.Determine if the server is powered off or not.

If you are installing a hard drive in a server that is powered off, see “Powering On the Server” on page 20 to power the server back on. The server recognizes the new hard drive once it has completely booted up.
If you are installing a hard drive in a server that is powered on, continue with these procedures so that your server recognizes the new hard drive.

6. Configure the newly installed hard drive e.g.

# cfgadm -la

# cfgadm -c configure c1::dsk/c1t1d0

7. Confirm that the drive is now connected and configured. e.g.

# cfgadm -la

# format

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN the SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other.
