FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4450 Disk Backplane needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Note - FRU: This field-replaceable unit should be replaced only by qualified service technicians.
Need shutdown OS and power off server

How to Remove Disk Backplane

1. Power off the server.
2. Disconnect the power cord (or cords) from the power supply (or supplies).
3. Remove the server from the rack.
4. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
5. Remove the top cover.
6. Remove all drives.
7. Remove the DVD/USB module.
8. Remove the fan modules.
9. Remove the No. 2 Phillips screws securing the drives cage to the chassis.
10. Slide the drives cage forward to disengage the backplane from the paddle card.
11. Lift the drives cage up and disconnect the drive data cables.
12. Set the drives cage on an antistatic mat.
13. Remove the four No. 2 Phillips screws securing the backplane to the drives cage.
14. Slide the backplane down and off the drives cage retention hooks.
15.Place the drives backplane on an antistatic mat.


How to Install Disk Backplane

1. Slide the backplane under the retention hooks on the drives cage.
2. Install the four No. 2 Phillips screws that secure the backplane to the drives cage.
The sequence is top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right.

3.Connect the drive data cables.
Press the connector into its socket until it snaps into place.

4.Position the drives cage in the chassis, over its standoffs.
5.Slide the drives cage back until the drives backplane engages with the paddle card connector.
6.Replace the No. 2 Phillips screws securing the drives cage to the chassis.
7.Install the fan modules.
8.Install the top cover.
9.Install the server into the rack.
10.Install the drives.
11.Install the DVD/USB module.
12.Reconnect the power cord (or cords) to the power supply (or supplies).
13.Power on the server.


How to verify the Disk Backplane working properly.

log in ILOM to confirm if disk status working properly.

Check ILOM event log to see if any error related HDDs.

-> show /SP/faultmgmt
-> show /SP/logs/event/list



Check if all HDD working normal on Solaris environment.

1. Use format command to check HDD status
Sample:

2. Use iostat command to check HDD status
