This document gives the procedure to upgrade a 7000 / ZS-x cluster.

Goal

This document is to provide a guidance for doing a cluster update the correct way.

There are two separate cluster configurations and processes :

  1.  Active-Active Cluster
  2.  Active-Passive Cluster

Clustered nodes must be upgraded one right after the other.

Important requirement: Before starting the maintenance window, make sure the gzipped firmware tarball has been downloaded and saved on a local host, available to the NAS box in ftp or http.
Review the Release Notes carefully for every version between installed version and version you are going to update to.

Warning: Clustered nodes CANNOT be left at two different code versions longer than 8 hours.  Systems left at two different code versions can corrupt data and cause an outage for days in order to repair.

Solution

Information from the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance Customer Service Manual

  • Remove extraneous system updates.
  • Check the most recent release notes ... also review the release notes from all applicable previous releases.
  • Disable non-critical data services.
  • Create a backup copy of the management configuration...
  • Ensure that any resilvering and scrub operations have completed.
  • Ensure that there are no active problems.
  • For more information, see Active Problems Display.
  • Perform a health check. See Checking System Health BUI, CLI.
  • Schedule a maintenance window of at least one hour to allow for disruptions in storage performance and availability during update.

Location of the Appliance Kit software for download - See Doc ID 2021771.1 (Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: Software Updates)

The file downloaded is a zip file --- Once it's stored on a client system unzip the file then change directory to the p########_revision_Generic/All_Supported_Platforms (Do not unzip the gz file)

Example:
From the Web Browser https://[your_nas_hostname]:215/#maintenance/system
click the '+' next to Available Updates
a pop-up windows will allow you to browse to the p########_Generic\All_Supported_Platforms\ and upload the gz file

Note:  If you are under revision ak-2011.04.24.4.2 (upgrade to ak-2011.04.24.4.2 then to the latest code available).   For older than ak-2010.08.17.1.0 open a Support Request with Oracle to help upgrade to revision ak-2010.08.17.2.1

NOTE:  To prevent any 'spurious' ASRs being generated during the upgrade procedure, you may consider disabling 'ASR/Phone Home' on the appliance, or deactivating ASR for the asset via My Oracle Support (See Doc ID 1508403.1)

NOTE:  From the BUI, a reboot may be initiated by clicking the 'opposing arrows' icon on the right-hand side of the server line on the Maintenance Hardware screen.

NOTE: With the 2013.1.6.0 (AK8.6.0) or later releases, we can update a CLUSTERED or OWNER node.

So, for earlier releases - where the cluster head must be STRIPPED when upgrading - follow :

How to upgrade a clustered system running 2013.1.5.x Release or Earlier
