Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: WZT-6511: Sun Fire Nehalem-Based Rack Mount Servers Troubleshooting
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 3
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Failed/Faulty CPU
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS
A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures
1. Power off the server and unplug (REMOVE) the power cords from power supplies
2. Remove the top cover
3. Identify the CPU to be removed by pressing the Fault Remind button. Amber LED indicates the CPU needs to be replaced
4. Using an Allen wrench, unscrew the 2 screws from the heatsink of the faulty CPU (Alternate one and a half turns between each screw until fully remove)
5. Gently twist the heatsink to break the grease gel. Lift off the heatsink and place it upside down on a flat surface
===================================================
Caution - Failure to clean the heatsink and the CPU prior to removing the CPU could result in the accidental contamination of the CPU socket or other components. Also, be careful not to get the grease on your fingers, as this could result in contamination of components.
===================================================
6. Use an alcohol pad to clean the thermal grease from the heatsink (bottom) and the CPU (top) (Be careful to not get thermal grease on other components or your fingers)
7. Push the CPU leaver down, move it to the side away from the CPU and rotate upwards to disengage
8. Open the pressure frame and remove the faulty CPU
9. Install the replacement CPU by carefully placing in the socket, ensuring the socket alignment tabs are in the correct position
10. Lower the pressure frame
11. Engage the release lever by pushing it down and under the catch
12. Apply thermal grease (0.1m) to the middle of the top of the CPU, using the syringe within the replacement CPU packaging
13. Ensure the heatsink has no dust and line up the screws with the mounting studs. Place the heatsink on the CPU and align with the mounting posts
14. Tighten the screws, alternating one and a half turns between each screw until fully secured and install the air duct.
15. Replace the main cover
16. Re-connect the power cords
17. Log into the ILOM Command Line Interface and clear the fault for the faulty CPU
Example: show /SB/faultmgmt (to review faults)
set /SYS/MB/PX clear_fault_action=true (Where X is the CPU number as identified by the show fault string)
Example:
-> show /SP/faultmgmt
Targets:
0 (/SYS/MB/P0)
Properties:
Commands:
cd
show
-> set /SYS/MB/P0 clear_fault_action=true
-> set /SYS/MB/P0 clear_fault_action=true
Are you sure you want to clear /SYS/MB/P0 9y/n)? y
Set ‘clear_fault_action” to ‘true’
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot up system and verify full functionality
