Goal

How to Troubleshoot Fibre-Channel Problems on a Unified Storage

Solution

The purpose of this document is to assist in identifying, troubleshooting
and resolving Fibre-Channel lun issues related to the Zfs Storage Appliance.

1. Symptoms

a. The target / lun is not visible on the host ( cannot see device in format after initial configuration)
b. The target/lun has disappeared.
c. The target/lun is offline.
d. The target/lun is present but not responding to the host commands (eg.Busy)
e. The target/lun is present but resulting in transport or timeouts (link errors or queue overruns)
f. The target/lun is experiencing a failover to another path too quickly or to a path which has already experienced a failure.
g. Boot issues
h. Performance issues.

2. Troubleshooting steps.

Step 1 - Identify the device or device path.  Validate that the HBA in the path can be seen from the Operating System, and the devices connected to the HBA are visible.

Refer to 1432935.1 Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to verify host connectivity to Unified Storage

Step 2 - Validate that the multi-pathing software is optimal.

Refer to 1433014.1 Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to verify that the multipathing software (MPxIO / VxDMP) is optimal

Step 3 - Verify the Unified Storage configuration for FC connectivity is correct if it has not already been checked in step 1 above.

Refer to 1434004.1 Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Verifying that the Unified Storage has been configured correctly for Fibre-Channel connectivity

Step 4 - Verify the Fabric health of the FC connectivity to the Unified Storage if it has not already been checked in step 1 above.

Refer to 1434045.1 Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Verifying the Fabric health for Fibre-Channel connectivity

Step 5 - Troubleshooting boot issues

To troubleshoot FC boot issues, please refer to Implementing Fibre Channel SAN Boot with Oracle's Sun ZFS Storage Appliance

Step 6 - Troubleshooting performance issues related to FC luns

Refer to 1434007.1 Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Troubleshooting performance problems with Fibre-Channel Luns

Step 7 - At this point, if the configuration checks and the above troubleshooting steps have been carried out and the issue still exists, please gather the following:

        - a Solaris[TM] Explorer (Refer to 1312847.1 Sun Explorer Product Information Center).

        - a support bundle after collecting analytics information (in case of performance issues). Refer to 1019887.1 Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to collect supportfile bundle using BUI or CLI.

and contact Oracle Support to raise a Service Request.
