Sun Network Switch - Version Not Applicable and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

In some Cisco environments VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) is used by the Cisco switches to propagate Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) definitions. This may lead to Cisco VTP multicast storms when switches of other vendors get connected.

This document describes how to deal with Cisco VTP multicast storms on a Sun 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switch.

Fix

We have the following options:

  • for long term solution, move the environment to a standard protocol to propagate VLAN definitions between switches, e.g. GARP VLAN Registration Protocol (GVRP)
  • for short term solution disable or block the outgoing port on the Cisco switch for VTP or
  • block the Sun switch inbound side in SEFOS similar to the below

mac access-list extended 1
deny any host 01:00:0c:cc:cc:cc priority 7

interface ex0/72
mac access-group 1 in
