Time Estimate: 120 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Memory DIMM replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.  A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.

ESD Caution:

  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat

DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED:

Note - This is a cold service procedure that can be performed by customers.

Caution - Do not leave DIMM slots empty since filler panels are required in all empty DIMM slots (except on the Netra products).

Remove a DIMM

1. Perform the preliminary steps required for cold service procedures.
2. Extend the server to the maintenance position.
3. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
4. Remove the top cover.
5. For SPARC servers, swing the air duct up and forward to the fully open position.  For Netra servers, the DVD tray may have to be removed.
6. Press the Remind button on the motherboard to identify the DIMMs that need to be replaced.
7. Push down on the ejector tabs on each side of the DIMM until the DIMM is released.

Caution - DIMMs and heat sinks on the motherboard may be hot.

8. Grasp the top corners of the faulty DIMM and lift it out of its slot.
9. Place the DIMM on an antistatic mat.
10. Repeat Step 7 through Step 9 for any other DIMMs you intend to remove.
11. If you do not plan to install replacement DIMMs at this time, install filler panels in the empty slots for non-Netra servers.  The Netras do not require the filler panel.

Install a DIMM

1. Perform the preliminary steps required for cold service procedures.
2. Extend the server to the maintenance position.
3. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
4. Remove the top cover.
5. Swing the air duct up and forward to the fully open position.
6. Unpack the replacement DIMMs and place them on an antistatic mat.
7. Ensure that the ejector tabs on the connector that will receive the DIMM are in the open position.
8. Align the DIMM notch with the key in the connector.

Caution - Ensure that the orientation is correct. The DIMM might be damaged if the orientation is reversed.

9. Push the DIMM into the connector until the ejector tabs lock the DIMM in place.
   - If the DIMM does not easily seat into the connector, check the DIMM’s orientation.
10. Repeat Step 7 through Step 9 until all new DIMMs are installed.
11. For Sparc servers return the air duct to the closed position.  For Netra servers, the DVD tray should be reinstalled if removed.
12. Install the top cover.
13. Slide the server into the rack.
14. Connect the power cords.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system:
1. Run the Solaris "fmadm faulty" and SP/ILOM "show faulty" command (if only ALOM is supported run "showfaults -v" command) to verify that the fault has been cleared.
2. Perform one of the following tasks based on your verification results:
   * If the previous steps did not clear the fault, refer to doc 1004229.1 for information about the tools and methods you can use to diagnose and clear
     component faults.
   * If the previous steps indicate that no faults have been detected, the component has been replaced successfully. No further action is required
3. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
