Solution

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: T4-2 Server, Service Processor replacing.

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?:  No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

Time Estimate: 150 minutes

Task Complexity: 0

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Service Processor failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown. Then power down system and disconnect the power cords. A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.

DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.
Note: When possible, prior to replacement login to the ILOM/SP and check the reported version of System Firmware. If the server is running 8.9.5-8.9.5.a, update the System Firmware to 8.9.8 then proceed with replacement. This is to avoid running into "Error Reading Keyswitch Value" due to Bug 24489657.

NOTE: When replacing the service processor (SP), you must backup/restore the configuration settings maintained in the SP. Before replacing the SP, save the configuration using the Oracle ILOM backup utility. Refer to the Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) 3.2.x Documentation for instructions on backing up and restoring the Oracle ILOM configuration: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37444_01/html/E37446/z400371a1482122.html

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED:

NOTE: After replacing the SP, the new SP firmware component must be compatible with the existing host firmware component. If the firmware components are incompatible, load new system firmware.

NOTE: Following SP/ILOM replacement if any device used by the LDOM configuration is disabled or faulted, the system will attempt to boot into a degraded configuration (if possible) or will revert to the factory-default profile. So, if the system is using Oracle VM (LDom) we recommend as a precaution to perform a backup of the LDom configuration (per doc 1019720.1) prior to SP replacement.

A) Prepare for servicing:

1. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
2. Power off the server and unplug power cords from the power supplies.
3. Remove the server from the rack.
4. Remove the top cover.

B) Removing the service processor.

1. Locate the service processor.

2. Remove the service processor by completing the following tasks.
a. Grasp the service processor by the two grasp points and lift up to disengage the service processor from the connectors on the motherboard.  (Remove the 2 screws on the Netra.)
b. Lift the service processor up and away from the motherboard.

Note: If you are removing the service processor because you are replacing the motherboard, set the service processor aside as you will need to reinstall it on the new motherboard.

C) Installing the service processor

1. Install the service processor by completing the following tasks.
a. Lower the side of the service processor with the Align Tab sticker at an angle down on the service processor tab on the motherboard.
b. Press the service processor straight down until it is fully seated in its socket.  (Insert the 2 screws on the Netra)

2. Return the server to an operational condition:
a. Install the top cover.
b. Return the server to the normal rack position.
c. Reinstall the power cords to the power supplies.

3. Prior to powering on the server, connect a terminal or a terminal emulator (PC or workstation) to the service processor SER MGT port.

If the replacement service processor detects that the service processor firmware is not compatible with the existing host firmware, further action will be suspended and the following message will be displayed:

Unrecognized Chassis: This module is installed in an unknown or unsupported chassis. You must upgrade the firmware to a newer version that supports this chassis.

If you see the preceding message, continue to the next step 4. Otherwise, skip to Step 5.

4. Download the system firmware. You can load any supported system firmware version, including the firmware version that was installed prior to replacing the service processor.
a. Configure the service processor NET MGT port so that it can access the network, and log in to the service processor through the NET MGT port. Refer to the Oracle ILOM documentation for network configuration instructions.
b. Download the system firmware.
Follow the firmware download instructions in the Oracle ILOM documentation and the specific firmware patch.

NOTE: In case the FW upgrade via ILOM BUI fails, please use the CLI method (see example in doc 2019500.1). You may need a source of TFTP in order to upgrade firmware via CLI commands, for details refer to: Solaris[TM] Operating System: How to set-up a TFTP server. (Doc ID 1004474.1)

c. If you created a backup of your Oracle ILOM configuration, use the ILOM restore utility to restore the configuration of the replacement service processor.
Refer to the Oracle ILOM documentation for instructions.

NOTE: In some cases when updating the SysFW via CLI (and during CLI execution), it may fail with the following error:

-> load -source tftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/Sun_System_Firmware-x_x_x_x-SPARC_Tx-x.pkg
Error reading keyswitch value

If that happens, refer to doc 1517032.1 for the workaround steps and the fix.

5. Power on the server.

6. Verify the service processor functionality.

7. Set the ILOM date/time.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?
Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system:
1. Run the Solaris "fmadm faulty" and SP/ILOM "show faulty" command (if only ALOM is supported run "showfaults -v" command) to verify that the fault has been cleared.
2. Perform one of the following tasks based on your verification results:
   * If the previous steps did not clear the fault, refer to doc 1004229.1 for information about the tools and methods you can use to diagnose and clear
     component faults.
   * If the previous steps indicate that no faults have been detected, the component has been replaced successfully. No further action is required
3. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
