DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?: No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure
TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 0
REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: power supply failure
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
ESD Caution:
- Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
- Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
- Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat
DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc). If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.
* If your server is equipped with two power supply units, you can hot-swap a power supply. If your server only has one power supply, you must take the server offline and remove power before you replace the power supply.
* During operation, and empty power supply bay must have a filler panel installed for proper environmental control.
WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED:
Remove a Power Supply
1. Identify which power supply (0 or 1) requires replacement.
2. Determine if you can hot-swap the power supply:
- If there are two power supplies, you can hot-swap the faulty power supply without shutting down the server. Go to Step #4.
- If there in only one power supply, you must shut down the server before replacing the power supply. Go to Step #3.
3. Shut down the Oracle Solaris OS.
4. Disconnect the power cord from the faulty power supply.
5. Grasp the power supply handle, press the release latch and pull the power supply out of the server.
Caution - If you will not be replacing the power supply immediately, install a power supply filler panel before returning power to the server.
Note - This is a hot service procedure that can be performed by customers while the server is running.
Install a Power Supply
1. If the power supply bay contains a power supply filler panel, remove it.
2. Align the replacement power supply with the empty power supply chassis bay.
3. Slide the power supply into the chassis until it locks into place.
4. Plug the power cord into the power supply.
Note - As soon as power is applied to the server, standby power initializes the SP. Depending on the server’s OBP settings, the host server might automatically boot, or you might need to boot it manually.
5. Verify the functionality of the power supply.
Verify the Functionality of a Power Supply
1. Verify that the power supply Power OK and AC Present LEDs are lit, and that the Fault LED is not lit.
2. Verify that the front and rear Service Required LEDs are not lit.
3. Perform one of the following tasks based on your verification results:
* If the previous steps did not clear the fault, perform the required diagnostics process to ensure functionality.
* If Step 1 and Step 2 indicate that no faults have been detected, return the server to operation.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTIONS REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system, no service LEDs or messages. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
