DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?)
Netra/SPARC T3/T4 product training. Requires the ability to follow steps similar to what is in the product service manual.

TIME ESTIMATE: 120 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: System Configuration PROM failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
* The server must be fully shut down and powered down with the power cords disconnected. A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.

DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
* Take ESD Precautions. Components inside the chassis might be hot. Use caution when servicing components inside the chassis.

A. Remove the System Configuration PROM

Caution - The server must be fully shut down and the power cords disconnected.
Caution - This procedure involves handling circuit boards that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ensure that you follow ESD preventative practices to avoid damaging the circuit boards.
Caution - Components inside the chassis might be hot. Use caution when servicing components inside the chassis.

Note - The System Configuration PROM is plugged into a socket on the motherboard. It includes a yellow barcode label.

1. Perform the preliminary steps required for cold service procedures.

2. Extend the server out of the rack.

3. If you can access the rear area of the server without removing the server from the rack, go to Step 4, otherwise remove the server from the rack:
* Unplug all cables from the server.
* Remove the server from the Rack.

4. Remove the top cover.

4a. (Netra T4-1 only) Remove the PCI Mezzanine board & the right PCIe2 riser card.

4b. (Netra T4-2 only) Remove he PCIe2 cards in slots 1PCIe2, 2PCIe2, and 3PCIe2, if installed.

5. Pull up on the System Configuration PROM to remove it from its socket.
* The System Configuration PROM has a yellow barcode label on it.

B. Install the System Configuration PROM

1. Repeat steps A.1 to A.4.

2. Align the System Configuration PROM with the socket on the motherboard.
* The notch on the underside of the System Configuration PROM faces the rear of the server.

3. Plug the System Configuration PROM into the socket.
* Gently press down on the center of the System Configuration PROM to ensure that it is fully seated.

3a. (Netra T4-1 only) Insert the PCI Mezzanine board & the right PCIe2 riser card.

3b. (Netra T4-2 only) Insert the PCIe2 cards in slots 1PCIe2, 2PCIe2, and 3PCIe2, if were installed.

4. Replace the top cover.

5. Return the server to its operational position in the rack.

6. Restore power to the server.
Note - As the system boots up, watch for the banner display in the console output.

7. Verify that the banner display includes an Ethernet address, and Host ID value.

The Ethernet address and Host ID values are read from the System Configuration PROM. Their presence in the banner verifies that the SP and the host can read the System Configuration PROM.

8. For additional verification, run specific commands to display data stored in the System Configuration PROM.

  • Use the Oracle ILOM show command to display the MAC address:

    -> show /HOST macaddress
      /HOST
        Properties:
        macaddress = **:**:**:**:**:**
  • Use Oracle Solaris OS commands to display the hostid and Ethernet address:

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system, no service LEDs or messages. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
