REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: fan module failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.

The fans are hot-swappable parts

WHAT ACTION ARE REQUIRED:

Take ESD Precautions

A. Locate a Faulty Fan Module

1. Check the front or rear panel System Fault LED.

* A fan fault will cause the System Fault LED (on front and rear of server) as well as a Fan Fault LED in the array of fan status LEDs to be lighted.

2. Extend the server to the maintenance position.

3. Release the two fan compartment door latches and swing the door open.

4. If the color of a Fan Fault LED is amber, replace the corresponding fan module.

B. Remove a Fan Module

Caution - Do not remove a fan module until you have a replacement unit ready for installation. The server may be run for the time it takes to remove and install a fan module, but the fan door must not be open for more than 60 seconds.

1. Extend the server to the maintenance position.

2. Release the two fan compartment door latches and swing the door open.

3. Check the fan status LEDs to determine which fan module or modules need to be replaced.

* An amber LED identifies the faulty fan module.

4. To remove a fan module, grasp the pull tab, pull the module toward the front of the system, and then lift it up and out of the fan module compartment.

5. Check to be certain adjacent fan modules are still fully seated.

* You can do this by pressing down on the top of the neighboring fan modules.

Caution - If you will not be able to install a new fan module within one minute, power down the system.

C. Install a Fan Module

1. Repeat steps B.1 and B.2.

2. Align the connector pins on the base of the new fan module with the connector on the fan module board and lower the module straight down into the slot.

3. Press down on the top of the module until it is fully seated.

4. Check the following status LEDs to verify that the new fan is functioning.

* The fan module status LED associated with that fan module should be green.
* Both Service Required LEDs should be off.

5. Return the server to its operational position in the rack.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Verify functionality, no service LEDs or messages. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
