How to Replace a Failed Sun 10 Gigabit Network Card on an Exadata Database Node (X2-2)
Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
The FSE needs to be Exadata Trained.
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 3
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
The system administrator should prepare the system for service by performing any application
related functions required to shutdown the Database node, instructions are in Section 1 of DOC ID: 1539451.1. This might include, but is not limited to,
performing a system backup, failover of application or services, and finally a system shutdown.
The system will need to be powered down for this procedure.
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:
Please see the "Servicing PCIe Cards" within the "Sun Fire X4170 M2 Server Service Manual".
Power-off the target node for service.
Remove the power.
Label & pull the Ethernet Cables from the 10 Gigabit Ethernet Card at the rear of the server.
Transition the target node to the service position.
Remove the top cover.
Locate and Remove the PCIe Riser that includes the 10 Gigabit Ethernet Card.
Remove and Replace the defective 10 Gigabit Ethernet Card.
Re-Install the PCIe Riser.
Install the top cover.
Reconnect any cables disconnected earlier.
Slide the node back into the rack operating position.
Power on the system either via ILOM or via the push button on the front of the server.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE
SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Follow restart instructions in Section 1, step 10 of DOC ID: 1539451.1
The customer should test Ethernet connectivity over the 10 Gigabit Ethernet Card.
The 10 GbE interfaces are identified as eth4 and eth5 on Sun Fire X4170 M2 Oracle
Some ways they can do this include:
Use the ifconfig command and ensure the UP & RUNNING flags are present.
Example:
# ifconfig eth5
eth5 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1B:21:79:8D:8D
inet addr:192.168.23.2 Bcast:192.168.23.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::21b:21ff:fe79:8d8d/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:11234 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:2 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:699829 (683.4 KiB) TX bytes:180 (180.0 b)
Also use ethtool to ensure the link is running at the appropriate speed:
For example:
# ethtool eth5
Settings for eth5:
Supported ports: [ FIBRE ]
Supported link modes: 1000baseT/Full
10000baseT/Full
Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
Advertised link modes: 1000baseT/Full
10000baseT/Full
Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
Speed: 10000Mb/s
Duplex: Full
Port: FIBRE
PHYAD: 0
Transceiver: external
Auto-negotiation: on
Supports Wake-on: d
Wake-on: d
Current message level: 0x00000007 (7)
Link detected: yes
Verify network using 'ping'
# ping <IP>
Where <IP> = default router or another node on the same network
