DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED: Awareness of ILOM commands Sun Blade 6000 architecture.
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY:0
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Need to upgrade firmware on Sun Blade Storage Module M2
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?: All activity on the Storage Blade should be halted.
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:
To check current Sun Blade Storage Module M2 expander firmware revision.
Note that the Sun Blade Storage Module does not have its own ILOM.
From CMM ILOM cli:
-> show /CH/BLx -d properties
where x is slot number of the storage blade.
eg
-> show /CH/BL9 -d properties
/CH/BL9
Properties:
type = Blade
ipmi_name = BL9
fru_name = SUN BLADE STORAGE MODULE M2
fru_version = SAS0 5.3.8.0, SAS1 5.3.8.0
fru_part_number = 466-4585-01
fru_serial_number = 0FMU002
fru_extra_1 = SAS0 5.3.8.0, SAS1 5.3.8.0
fault_state = OK
load_uri = (none)
clear_fault_action = (none)
From CMM ILOM BUI:
Click on CMM on left hand panel
Within CMM select tab System Information sub tab Components
click on /CH/BLx where x is storage blade slot number.
A pop up window will display the blade information including the SAS
firmware revision on the blade SAS expanders
eg "SAS0 5.3.6.0, SAS1 5.3.6.0"
To upgrade SAS expander firmware on Sun Blade Storage Module M2
1) Download latest or required firmware from the Patches & Updates section of My Oracle Support
2) This will either be in the form of a patch the firmware package is available by unzipping the file, or it will be in the form of a
"Tools and Drivers DVD". In the second case the patch will require to be unzipped and the resultant iso file mounted to access the firmware update.
The firmware is contained in /Firmware/SAS2 directory.
3) The firmware upgrade can be carried out either from the CMM ILOM BUI
or the cli
The command looks like this from the CMM CLI:
->cd /CH/BLx
->load -source tftp://tftpserver/vB19-AA-sas2exp-5.3.8.0-rom.pkg
where x is the Blade slot the Sun Blade Storage Module M2 is installed
From CMM ILOM BUI:
Click on CMM on left hand panel
Within CMM select tab System Information sub tab Components
Select /CH/BLx where x is storage blade slot number.
Choose update firmware as action and proceed as normal ILOM firmware upgrade.
4) Check upgrade was successful using methods above.
Troubleshooting the Sun Blade Storage Module M2
Note The storage module (which does not have its own service processor) is managed by the
CMM ILOM. In the web interface, you will not see a blade listed for the storage module in the chassis device tree in the left panel.
The CMM event list will contain major events concerning to the storage blade such as insertion, power cycles and basic messages about SAS fabric. Therefore taking a normal snapshot from CMM to examine CMM
event list Blade indicator LEDS reported is a good first step.
Refer to the Sun Blade Storage Module M2 Service Manual at URL

for further advice on troubleshooting and detailed description of
board indicator LEDs
Zoning
The availability to server Blades of storage module resources is managed
through the CMM by the Sun Blade Zone Manager
The Sun Blade Zone Manager is available in the Sun Blade 6000 Modular
System CMM SW 3.0.10 or later, which includes Oracle ILOM 3.0.10 and later.
The Sun Blade Zone Manager use and interface is documented in the following manual.
Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) 3.0 CMM Administration for Sun Blade 6000 and Sun Blade 6048 Modular Systems
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19860-01/index.html
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Check firmware is at correct level as documented above. check disks
can be accessed from OS on Blades.
