How to Remove and Replace a Sun StorageTek 2500 Array Battery using CAM

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
Familiar with Sun Storage Common Array manager (CAM) / Service Advisor (SA) and Sun StorageTek 2500 Arrays

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS::
    - PROBLEM OVERVIEW

* A critical fault is received in CAM from the Sun StorageTek 2500 Array  (firmware 06.17 or 06.70, See Storage System Summary) indicating that a Battery has failed.

     xx.66.1006    A battery has failed or REC_FAILED_BATTERY = 6
     xx.66.1040    A battery has failed or REC_NON_FRU_FAILED_BATTERY = 4

If the battery life remaining is zero(0), physically reseat the battery and reset its age, a replacement is not necessary.
If the life remaining is greater than zero(0), then the battery should be replaced.

* A critical fault is received in CAM from the Sun StorageTek 2500 Array  (firmware 7.35.10.10 or later, See Storage System Summary) indicating that a Battery replacement is necessary.

  - WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
    RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?
   
    If this is a single controller tray, all I/O must be stopped.
    If this is a dual controller tray, I/O can continue if the attached hosts have setup dual-pathing correctly.

    - WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:

NOTE: If ASR is enabled, it should be deactivated temporarily before servicing the equipment so that additional unnecessary Service Requests are not created.

DEACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.10: ASR is automatically deactivated when you select "Reserve the tray for maintenance" in Service Advisor, and it is reactivated when you select "Release the tray from maintenance" in Service Advisor.

DEACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER: Before proceeding with the part replacement:

1. Log into CAM.
2. Go to "Storage Systems" -> [your arrayname] -> "Administration" -> "Array Health Monitoring".
3. Uncheck the box "Enable ASR for this array" under the section "Monitoring for This Array". If the box is already unchecked, there is no action required. Remember the status however, as it will matter in step 3 of REACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER below.
4. Click on "Save" if you have unchecked the box in step 3 above.

  * This document assumes that it is known to the engineer/administrator for which controller  a replacement battery is needed and that you have identified the correct controller (Controller A is the controller on the left viewed from the back of the array). Please note that the procedure for single controller tray (recognizable by having a controller in Slot A and a filler/blank assembly in Slot B) is slightly different. In the steps below the differences are highlighted when necessary
  * The Service Advisor software is needed to remove the controller and replace the battery.
Caution: Use care when handling either the new or failed battery. Make sure all ESD precautions are being followed.

* NOTE: When using Common Array Manager (CAM) 6.5.0 or below the Service Advisor (SA) instruct not to remove the battery if the Blue LED on the battery is NOT LIT. These can be ignored, if the battery is not in a Failed or Expired state. This will not invalidate the warranty. This problem is fixed in CAM 6.6.0 installations and above


1.) Determine if this storage array is a single controller array or a dual controller array. (see the note above)

     If this is a single controller tray, stop all I/O and skip to 5. If this is a dual controller array continue with step 2.)
2.) In Common Array Manager select the correct array under Storage Systems.
3.) Access the Service Advisor software and select "Array Troubleshooting and Recovery"
4.) Follow the SA procedure "Place a controller offline", then skip to 6.
5.) (Only applicable to single controller arrays)
i. Make sure the Cache Active LED is "Off"
ii. For each power assembly in the tray, press the ON/OFF power switch to the OFF position.  
6.) Label the host interface cables, expansion tray interface cables (if present),ethernet cable, and SFP transceivers (if present) connected to the controller.
7.) Disconnect the cables from the controller.
8.) Push and hold the latch tab on the left side of the failed controller to the right and lift the lever/handle up to remove the controller from the tray.
9.) Remove the controller so that you can have access to the battery.
10.) Turn the controller over so that the open side of the controller is visible and the front of the controller is facing towards you.
11.) Place the controller on a flat surface.
12.) From the front of the controller, locate the battery in the right rear corner.
13.) With a phillips head screwdriver, loosen the captive screw at the rear of the battery and its mounting bracket.
14.) Slide the battery out of the rear of the controller.
15.) Unpack the new battery and do one of the following:
- Place the failed battery in the packing materials so that you can return it to Oracle for proper disposal.
- Properly dispose of the failed battery
16.) Carefully insert the new battery into the controller until the connectors are completely mated.
Use care to align the connector at the end of the battery with the connector in the controller.
17.) Tighten the captive screw.
18.) Insert the controller into its tray until it connects with the midplane connector, and push the lever/handle down to the locked position.
Note Be sure that the latch tab holds the lever/handle in place.
19.) Reconnect all cables you removed in step 6.) to the controller.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
    - WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER/CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
    AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

1.) If this is a single controller tray, press the ON/OFF switch on each of the power assemblies to the ON position.
     If this is a dual controller tray, skip to step 6.)


2.) Wait approximately 60 seconds for the controller to complete its boot process, at which point ensure that the following is true:
- All Link port LEDs (which have cables inserted) are "On"
- All Fault LEDs are "Off"


3.) Access the Service Advisor software and verify under "BatteryRemoval/Replacement that the current state value is Enable and the Status value is OK for the battery.
If the State and Status values are not Enable and OK, contact your Oracle Service provider or your next level of technical support.
Note If the battery requires charging, its Status value might be Degraded until it becomes completely charged.  

4.) Follow the SA procedure "Resetting the Controller Battery Age" to reset the battery age.

5.) Follow the SA procedure "Resetting the Controller Battery Age" to reset the battery age.

6.) For dual controller arrays: The controller needs to be placed online. Access the Service Advisor software and select "Array Troubleshooting and Recovery"

7.) Follow the SA procedure "Place a controller online"


8.) Wait approximately 60 seconds for the controller to complete its boot process, at which point ensure that the following is true:
- All Link port LEDs (which have cables inserted) are "On"
- All Fault LEDs are "Off"


9.) Access the Service Advisor software and verify under "BatteryRemoval/Replacement that the current state value is Enable and the Status value is OK for the battery.
If the State and Status values are not Enable and OK, contact your Oracle Service provider or your next level of technical support.
Note If the battery requires charging, its Status value might be Degraded until it becomes completely charged.


10.) Follow the SA procedure "Resetting the Controller Battery Age" to reset the battery age.

REACTIVATING ASR with CAM 6.10: ASR is automatically deactivated when you select "Reserve the tray for maintenance" in Service Advisor, and it is reactivated when you select "Release the tray from maintenance" in Service Advisor. If ASR was not enabled before beginning this procedure, selecting "Release the tray from maintenance" will not activate it.

REACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER: After proceeding with the part replacement:

1. Log into CAM.
2. Go to "Storage Systems" -> [your arrayname] -> "Administration" -> "Array Health Monitoring".
3. Check the box "Enable ASR for this array" under the section "Monitoring for This Array". Do this ONLY if you unchecked the box in step 3 of DEACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER. If you found the box was unchecked, leave it unchecked now.
4. Click on "Save" if you have checked the box to reactivate ASR.

Note: Sun StorageTek 2500 Arrays can have have one or two batteries depending on the controller configuration.
