How to Diagnose IBM LTO tape drive using ITDT Tool.

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Knowledge of IBM LTO tape drives.

- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 Minutes

- TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW
How to run a diagnostic of an IBM LTO drive using ITDT software.
What is needed:
1. ITDT installed.
2. Tape drive connected to the host that has ITDT is installed on it.
3. Known good media for LTO drive to test drive.

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
All work to the effected drive should be stopped. Drive should be taken offline from the Operation System and Software Application.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Start the ITDT Utility.
2. Enter [S] to scan for connected Tape Drive Devices.

Note:

The tape drives should appear on the window and can be isolated by Serial Number.
If a drive does not appear, verify connectivity and verify the OS is seeing the drive.

3. Load media on the Drive. Use SLConsole or any other method to load it to the Drive.

**ATTENTION Information on the media will be deleted so the customer's media should never be used**

4. When Drive is ready with loaded media, select the Drive Number to be tested.
    Enter [T] to begin.
    - A new Window will appear displaying "IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool Standard Edition - Device Test".
    - A Progress Bar will show the progress of the Test and Status will shows the Current test been Run on the drive.
5. When the Test completes, it will display Fail or Pass.
If it fails a Dump is generated. .blz(shows test results) and in some cases a full dump with a.gz, b.gz. and blz is generated.
The Files are saved on the output folder of the ITDT tool (Same folder as the application ITDT.)
     The filles are called XXXXXXXX.BBB.blz
XXXXXXXX is the SERIAL number of the drive displayed on ITDT.
BBB is the number for diferent registers of the Same Drive SN.
6. Run the test again with different, known good media to verify this is not a media issue.
7. Send the gathered DUMP, .gz and .blz files to Tape Hardware Support for analysis as needed and update the Service Request.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Once diagnostics has been completed, bring drive back online to the Operating System and Software Application.

REFERENCE INFORMATION:
