Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?):
Sun Blade x6250 / Sun Blade x6450

Time Estimate: 60 minutes TASK COMPLEXITY: 3

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Incorrect product serial number

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : Maintenance window required to boot off floppy image

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Sun Blade product serial number needs to be reprogrammed after a blade replacement to match the original product serial number before the blade replacement.

This way the blade identity doesn't change after replacement and contract and asset management is unchanged for the customer.

The official procedure to update product serial number for Wolf (X6250) or Hercules (x6450) Blades is to use the WHFRU utility which is available as a floppy image. Note that to perform this task the ILOM version doesn't matter.

1. Connect to the Blade ILOM using an ssh connection to check current serial:

-> show /SYS -d properties

Properties:
    type = Host System
    ipmi_name = /SYS
    chassis_name = SUN BLADE 6000 MODULAR SYSTEM
    chassis_part_number = 541-1983-07
    chassis_serial_number = 1005LCB-0712YM00NE
    chassis_manufacturer = SUN MICROSYSTEMS
    product_name = Sun Blade X6450 Server Module
    product_part_number = 594-5769-01
    product_serial_number = 0842QAH005 <------ Incorrect
    product_manufacturer = Sun Microsystems
    prepare_to_remove_status = NotReady
    prepare_to_remove_action = (none)
    return_to_service_action = (none)
    power_state = Off

2. Start the ILOM Java Remote Console from the ILOM web GUI -> Remote Control -> Redirection tab

3. Mount and boot the system from the floppy image attached to this document via ILOM JavaR Console Device menu

  • In ILOM go to the "Host" option tab and set next boot to "BIOS"
  • Power cycle the platform. The system will enter the BIOS Menu.
  • In the BIOS menu go to the "Boot" tab and set the Virtual Floppy and CDROM as first boot device. The system will now boot into Windows 95 floppy image (Banana).

4. Run the command:

A:\>whfru -m0 -ssn <10digitserial>

For Example:

A:\>whfru -m0 -ssn 1234QAH019
WHFRU v1.08 (Fed 18 2009)
system identified as Sun Blade x6450 Server Module
Setting System Serial Number to: 1234QAH019
m0: Setting System Serial Number (10-byte)...
Writing FRU prom... Done (System and SP restart is needed to take affect)
A:\>

5.  Reset the HOST and SP (graceful shutdown, power off or power cycle) for the changes to take effect.

6. Once the SP is booted then check the serial to verify the product serial number is now correct

- Log back to the Blade ILOM and run the command:

-> show /SYS -d properties

Properties:
    type = Host System
    ipmi_name = /SYS
    chassis_name = SUN BLADE 6000 MODULAR SYSTEM
    chassis_part_number = 541-1983-07
    chassis_serial_number = 1005LCB-0712YM00NE
    chassis_manufacturer = SUN MICROSYSTEMS
    product_name = Sun Blade X6450 Server Module
    product_part_number = 594-5769-01
    product_serial_number = 1234QAH019 <------ Correct
    product_manufacturer = Sun Microsystems
    prepare_to_remove_status = NotReady
    prepare_to_remove_action = (none)
    return_to_service_action = (none)
    power_state = Off
