How to Replace A  J4XXX  SIM Module  In A Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-4 & Sun Storage 7000 Series

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Trained J4400 /J4200/J4500 and  J4410 engineer

- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

- TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
What: SIM  requires replacement.
Where: Chassis S/N: Location: (Should be inserted by TSC)
Why: A SIM module has been determined as failed and needs to be replaced.
(Insert additional information if required)

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

System can be online.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Determine whether the JBOD used is a J4400/J4200 /J4500(SAS.1) or a J4410 (SAS.2) and accordingly check if the part is correct.
The two parts cannot be interchanged. Additionally SIM's in a single JBOD cannot be of different.

2. Take ESD Precautions.

3. The SIM boards are hot-swappable and multi-pathed.

4. Verify the SIM module to the replaced.
* Physically check the SIM that requires replacement. It could have an amber or a blue LED.
Take note if the module is the same as the one identified in the SR. If not, check if the other SIM on the JBOD is online.

* The SIM module failure will be visible using the "BUI Maintenance->Hardware" view. JBODs with a failed SIM will report only 1 path instead of the usual 2 paths.
The back view of the JBOD chassis in the BUI will show the failed SIM as missing.

The appliance would have logged an alert as ;
The component 'SIM (0|1)' has been removed from chassis 'XYZ'

* From the appliance CLI this situation may look like the SIM is absent
maintenance hardware> list -> select chassis-xxx -> select slot show

There will likely be a problem reported with the JBOD:
maintenance problems> select problem-xxx show

5. Remove the SIM module

6. Insert the new SIM module
Wait approximately 60 seconds for the SIM board to complete its boot process, at which time the Power LED should be solid green and the SIM locate LED should be off.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

7. Verify the SIM replacment in the BUI/CLI
Confirm there are no faults reported in the appliance

BUI:

Maintenance -> Problems or Maintenance -> Hardware ("Mark Repaired"

CLI:

Maintenance-> problems > select problem-xxx and then mark-repaired.

Check whether the SIM is correctly seen.
CLI:
maintenance hardware> list -> select chassis-xxx -> select slot show
BUI:
The back view of the JBOD chassis in the BUI will show the failed SIM as being replaced.
8. Ensure that the SIM f/w are the same.
* If f/w on the replaced SIM is later than the existing SIM, then upgrade nas f/w to the latest.
The SIM's will all be upgraded as part of the upgrade procedure.
If any SIM fails to upgrade, re-seat it.

* If f/w on the replaced SIM is lower than the existing SIM's, then upgrade the SIM in the following way:

- if it is a stand-alone system, you can restart akd through the BUI:
maintenance system restart
or you can reboot the system:
maintenance system reboot.

- If it is a cluster, then all pools must be owned by one head to upgrade the SIM's.
To do that, reboot the active head and the other head should take care of updating the code.
