Goal

Steps to recover a lost root password on a Datacenter Infiniband Switch 36 or QDR Gateway Switch running 1.3.X  or later firmware.

Solution

If you know the password for the ilom-admin user, and you are running 1.3.X firmware you must first upgrade the firmware to 2.X .
Updating the firmware can be accomplished logged in as ilom-admin

With firmware 2.X and up, you can change an unknown root password if you know the ilom-admin password.

You MUST have physical access to the switch and perform this work connected to the USB Serial port.
It will NOT work if you attempt this over the network.

The steps for login through USB port are as follows:

          1. Attach a USB-to-Serial connector to the USB port of the switch, and connect a serial terminal.  (Or, a laptop)
                 NOTE: (if an additional Serial-to-USB cable is needed on the laptop due to no standard serial port on it, you will also need a null modem cable in between the two Serial-to-USB adapters)
          2. Verify that your terminal or laptop is operational.
          3. Configure the terminal device or the terminal emulation software to use the following settings:
                      8N1: eight data bits, no parity, one stop bit
                      115200 baud
                      Disable software flow control (XON/XOFF)
                      Disable hardware control
                      Press the Return or Enter key on the serial device several times to synchronize the connection.

            4. Log in as the ilom-adm user and reset root password

                infiniband36p login: ilom-admin
                Passwd: ilom-admin    (this is the default password)

Then set the new password as follows:

-> set /SP/users/root password
Enter new password: **********
Enter new password again: ********
->

The root password is now successfully changed.

If the ilom-admin password is also lost, then the switch must be replaced or restored to factory defaults as described in document.

Procedure to restore NM2-36p and NM2-GW switches to factory image (Doc ID 1467182.1)

This procedure to restore the switch to factory image MUST be performed by an Oracle Engineer.
