Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?: No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure
- TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 0
REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
What: Fan module
Where: Top of the NAS-head FAN X on FB X
Why : The fan module has been identified as being faulty by the appliance and/or SR owner
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
The system can be up and running if the cables have enough free movement to allow the nas-head to be fully extracted to the maintenance position on the rack mount kit.
- WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:
Note: Unless the power to the server is completely shut down, the only service permitted in the fan compartment is the replacement of the fan modules.
Note: If the fan-alerts received are concerning more than one fan on the same fan power-board, and the system is a 7110, 7310 or 7410, please inform the SR-owner.
1. Preparation
1.1 Extend the server into the maintenance position.
1.2 To access the fans, on all systems except 7210, 7420 and ZS3-4, open the top cover fan door. Press the two green release buttons on the sides of the fan door to release the door. Rotate the fan door to the open position and hold it there. On 7210, release the two screws, at the front of the system, in each top-corner to unlock the fan-cover, and tilt it open. On 7420 and ZS3-4, the fans are accessed externally.
NOTE - Replace the fan within 30 seconds to ensure proper cooling is maintained at all times. For systems with fan-doors on top of the modules, close the top cover door within 60 seconds to maintain adequate airflow to properly cool the server. Leaving the door open for more than 60 seconds, while the server is running, might cause the server to overheat and shut down.
2. Removing the fan modules
2.1 Locate the faulted fan in the BUI. Maintenance -> Hardware -> show details -> Fan
2.2 Identify the faulty fan module by checking the fan status LED, if no amber LED is lit, use the fan identity from the alert, and use the markings in the system to identify the correct fan-module.
2.3 Lift the fan module straight up and out of the fan power board.
Caution - When removing a fan module, do NOT rock it back and forth. Rocking a fan module might damage to the fan board connectors.
3. Installing the fan modules
3.1 Position the fan module so that the connector on the underside of the module aligns with connector on the fan power board.Apply firm, downward pressure to the fan module to fully seat it into the fan power board.
3.2 Verify that the Fan Fault status LED for the replaced fan module is lit green.
3.3 Close the fan door if applicable.
4. Returning the server back into operations
4.1 Push the server back into the rack, re-attach cables if they were disconnected prior to putting the system in the maintenance position.
4.2 If the system had been powered off, customer should log in to the service processor and start the system using "start /SYS" and wait for the appliance to boot up.
- WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:
Mark as fixed any component related alerts still visible in the BUI.
PARTS NOTE:

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
To report errors or request improvements on this procedure, please add a comment
If you see these symptoms on 7110, 7310 and 7410:
External sensors indicate that the fan FB 0 FM 1' is no longer operational
External sensors indicate that the fan FB 0 FM 0' is no longer operational
THEN CONFIRM THE FAULT CHECKING:
