Goal

To provide guidance on collecting analytics data for troubleshooting Fibre Channel performance issues.

To review the system's Fibre Channel performance and any problems associated with it, collecting the following statistics from analytics will be useful.

These are top level statistics, an Oracle Support engineer may request more specific statistics as and when the understanding of the problem deepens.

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - Disk Storage ZFS Storage Appliance Community

Solution

Statistics to collect:

CPU: percent utilization
Cache: ARC accesses per second broken down by hit/miss
Cache: L2ARC accesses per second broken down by hit/miss
Disk: Disks broken down by percent utilization
Disk: I/O operations per second broken down by disk
Disk: I/O bytes per second broken down by disk
Network: interface bytes per second broken down by interface
Protocol: Fibre Channel bytes per second (named: "As a raw statistic" in the menu)
Protocol: Fibre Channel operations per second (named: "As a raw statistic" in the menu )
Protocol: Fibre Channel bytes per second broken down by LUN
Protocol: Fibre Channel operations per second broken down by LUN
Protocol: Fibre Channel operations per second broken down by size
Protocol: Fibre Channel operations per second broken down by command
Protocol: Fibre Channel operations per second broken down by offset
Protocol: Fibre Channel operations per second broken down by latency

PLEASE NOTE:  The analytics noted in this document should only be run on an "as needed" basis and NOT run on a permanent basis as this may cause BUI/CLI as well as operational performance issues.

Steps to Follow:

1. In the BUI under the "Analytics -> Open Worksheets" page, use "+" icon to add the above statistics, and save the worksheet with a meaningful name eg: 'fcperf'. Now close the worksheet and the datasets will continue to run in the background.
2. After the problem has been observed
  • Open the saved worksheet
  • Synchronize all statistics
  • Pause the statistics, zoom in or out as appropriate to cover time of the problem as well as up to certain extent the normal performance time
  • Save and Close the worksheet
  • To send the worksheet either go to the "saved worksheets" tab and click on the upload icon visible to the right when hovering over the worksheet name, or login to the CLI and use the following command to send out the bundle with the worksheet
aksh> analytics worksheets select name=fcperf sendbundle
3. Provide the name of the file which was uploaded, the date time and TZ of the problem to the support engineer.
