DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Knowledge of L20 STK library, SDLT and LTO drives
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 2
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Tape drive is not functional and must be replaced.
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
Observe these precautions before beginning:
• Back up the server before removing the drive.
• If the drives are daisy-chained, stop all data processing on the channel to which the drives are connected
before disconnecting the drives.
• Make sure there is no activity on the SCSI bus before disconnecting the external SCSI cables. Stop all
processes on the host.
• Make sure all signals are terminated at each end of the SCSI bus. Do not mix single-ended and differential
terminators.
If your external SCSI cables are long enough that they do not interfere with replacing the drive, you do not need to disconnect those cables.
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Refer to the STK L20 Service Manual for complete instructions on drive replacement.
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19827-01/CRCM2238/CRCM2238.pdf
The manual will provide Pictures, Notes and Cautions to complete this task.
NOTE:
Under NO circumstances should tape drives be returned with Media still inside the drive. If a tape is stuck in a drive, review the Knowledge Base or contact Tape Hardware Support for instructions on how to remove the tape with an email to tapehw_ww@oracle.com include the SR/case number in the subject line of the email.
Tape Drive Removal:
1. Make sure that all activity involving the drive is stopped.
2. Open the drive access door by turning the door knobs to your left.
Note: Three cables must be removed from the drive. The cables are listed below.
3. Disconnect the drive SCSI connector from the rear of the drive.
4. Disconnect the library-to-drive interface connector.
5. Disconnect the drive power cable.
6. Unlatch the drive tray by turning the latch knob all the way to your left.
7. Pull out the drive tray and place it on a flat, stable surface.
8. Turn over the drive tray and remove the four Torx screws.
9. Unplug the TTI and power connector from the rear of the drive.
Note: You might need to move the drive away from the tray to access the power cable.
10. Lift and remove the drive from the tray.
Drives with a Cartridge Bezel:
When removing following drives, make sure you remove the cartridge bezel from the drive and replace the bezel in the new drive FRU. These drive FRUs do not ship with a cartridge bezel.
• Hewlett-Packard LTO3 Ultrium
• IBM LTO3 Ultrium
• Quantum (Certance) LTO3 Ultrium
• SDLT 320 and 600
Follow the procedure below to remove and replace the cartridge bezel for the different drive types:
HP LTO Bezel
The HP bezel is attached to the front of the HP drive assembly.
To remove the bezel:
1. Place drive on a work surface as shown below.
2. Press down on the two tabs as close to the drive face as possible. Use a small screwdriver, if necessary.
3. While holding pressure, rotate the bezel away from the drive until the top tabs are clear of the drive
faceplate.
4. Lift up on the bezel to release the lower tabs from the faceplate.
To replace the bezel:
1. Orient the bezel with the target as shown in the previous figure.
2. Insert the left tabs into the slots next to the cartridge slot.
3. Rotate the bezel against the drive faceplate and press until the right tabs snap into place.
4. Check that the bezel is against the drive faceplate at the left end.
IBM LTO Bezel:
The IBM bezel is attached to the front of the drive assembly.
To remove the bezel:
1. Gently press the two tabs on the right side of the bezel and rotate the bezel to the left until the left side
tabs disengage.
2. Pull the bezel away from the drive faceplate
To replace the bezel:
1. Orient the bezel with the target as shown in the previous figure.
2. Holding the bezel at a 30 degree angle to the drive face, insert the left tabs into the slots next to the
cartridge slot.
3. Rotate the bezel against the drive faceplate and press until the right tabs snap into place.
4. Check that the bezel is against the drive faceplate at the left end.
Quantum (Certance) LTO Bezel
To remove the bezel:
1. Remove the two m3 Torx pan head screws on the bottom corners of the bezel.
2. Pull the bezel straight away from drive faceplate.
To replace the bezel:
1. Orient the bezel with the target downward.
2. Align the screw holes over the two standoffs at the bottom corners of the cartridge slot.
3. Install the two m3 screw.
SDLT 320 Bezel
To remove the bezel:
1. Use a small screwdriver to press right on the two tabs on the right end in the gap between the bezel and
the tabs.
2. Lift the right end of the bezel slightly away from the drive face.
3. Slide the bezel left and lift away from the drive.
To replace the bezel:
1. Orient the bezel with the target downward.
2. Hold the bezel parallel to the drive faceplate and insert the left end tabs into the slots at the left side of the
cartridge port.
3. Hold the bezel against the drive and slide the bezel right.
4. Press the right side of the bezel against the drive until the tabs snap into place.
Drive Replacement:
1. Turn over the replacement drive and place it on a flat, sturdy work surface.
2. Check the terminating power jumper locations for the drive you replace.
3. Replace the TTI and power connectors.
4. Carefully slide the drive tray over the drive.
5. Using a Torx driver, attach the four screws on the bottom of the drive tray.
1. Holding the new drive as shown in the following figure, turn the knob all the way to your right.
2. Slide the replacement drive tray into the empty slot and tighten the drive tray latch by turning the knob all
the way to your right.
3. Pull back on the tray to ensure that the latch is secure.
4. Connect the drive SCSI connector to the rear of the drive.
5. Connect the library-to-drive interface connector.
6. Connect the drive power cable.
7. At the rear of the library, close the drive access door and turn the door knobs all the way to the right.
Note: For newer model libraries, push in the knobs and turn them all the way to the right.
8. If you are using the same SCSI ID for the new drive as for the old one, the library will automatically
assign that same address to the new drive and begin functioning as before. If the operator wants to
assign a new address, have the operator follow the drive configuration procedures in the L20 Tape
Library User’s Guide, part 95961.
9. Return the defective FRU according to your country’s warranty agreement.
10. Verify the drive is functional in the L20 library.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Have customer bring drive and library back online via the OS and software application. Verify drive is functional.
