Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
  - WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FE NEED:
Knowledge of SL Series & L Series Libraries, SLC, LTO Drives, HP LTT, SCSI Toolbox

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

TIME ESTIMATE: 45 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
   -PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
To upgrade HP LTO drive FW using available methods.
  - WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
Affected drives must be offline from host application.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Before being able to upgrade the drive firmware from the drive's service Ethernet port, the following needs to occur:

An Ethernet cable to connect to the service Ethernet port on the drive
The HP LTT (Library & Tape Tool) version 4.17. Please see Knowledge Doc ID 1014570.1 on how to get the tool.

The default IP address for the service Ethernet port on the drive is 10.0.0.1 so a crossover Ethernet cable can be used or a newer laptop and a standard Ethernet cable, set the IP to 10.0.0.0 or 10.0.0.2 and you should be able to talk to the drive.

Note: To connect the drive to your network you can change the IP address on the drive with the VOP tool. Please see Knowledge Doc ID 1014070.1 on how to get the VOP tool.

Once the drive is connected and can communicate over the service Ethernet port (ping is a good way to test connection), start the HP LTT tool and follow the below process to connect to the drive with the HP LTT tool:

Start the HP LTT tool
At the Startup screen you will be prompted to scan for a drive
Under "Scan Mode" click on "Hardware Scan"
Under I/O Mode click on "Ethernet (LTO-5 Onwards)" and then from the "Please select the Tape Library" drop down please select "IP Address"
Then put the IP address for the drive into the "Enter IP Address:Port" box
Click the "Continue" button

The HP LTT Tool should then come up with your drive selected in the devices box.

Method 1 : FW upgrade using HP LTT (Library & Tape Tool)

NOTE :Drive must be attached to over data path to FE's Laptop or Customer's host which has HP LTT program installed.

Download the LTT tool from the following KB: HP LTO - Where to Find and Download the HP LTO Library and Tape Test Diagnostic Tool (Doc ID 1014570.1)

The LTT application can be acquired from a L1 or L2 Tape Technical Support Center Representative.

1. Check Library & Drive matrix from Tape Support
     https://tapesupport.us.oracle.com/tape_hw/code_main.shtml
or OEM Tape page & identify the correct Patch ID.
      http://let47.central.sun.com/pmwiki/index.php?n=Main.FirmwareLevels?action=browse
2. Download the identified patch from MOS & unzip the patch.

How to find drive firmware patches for LTO tape drives (Doc ID 1922504.1)
There are two alternative methods to search for LTO tape drive firmware in MOS "Patches & Updates" section.

     Method 1:

     1. Select "Product or Family (Advanced)"

     2. For "Product", type and select: "Sun Product Patches"

     3. For release, select:
         - for LTO5 drives and earlier: "Sun StorageTek LTOx [...]"
         - for LTO6 drives and newer, search for "HP LTOx [...]" or "IBM LTOx [...]", depending on the exact drive model.

If the model does not appear, search for "Oracle StorageTek LTOx [...]".

Method 2 (only for LTO6 drives and newer or for latest IBM LTO5 releases):

     1. Select "Product or Family (Advanced)"

     2. For "Product", begin typing "HP LTO" or "IBM LTO". The list will limit the product selection to only tape drives. Select the appropriate model.

     3. For release, select interface (FC or SAS) and version (full-height or half-height).

3. Refer the README for patch specific instructions & precautions.
4. Start HP LTT program & select the appropriate Drive from the device list.
5. From main Menu select Firmware update icon.
6. From 'Local Firmware Files' tab browse & set the path of extracted patch.
7. From the 'Update Firmware' tab select the drive/s to be updated & Click 'Start Update' icon. Follow the
on screen instructions to complete the update.
8. Be careful not to reset or power cycle the drive during the update process.
9. Re-initialize drive after code upgrade.
10. Re-Connect the drive to Customer's host system.(if applicable)

Method 2 : FW upgrade using STK STB (SCSI Tool Box)  (CSE use only)
NOTE :Drive must be attached over data path to FE's laptop through Magma Box
            https://support.us.oracle.com/handbook_internal/FieldTools/pcibusexpbox.html
or to Customer's host which should have SCSI Tool Box SW installed.
            https://support.us.oracle.com/handbook_internal/FieldTools/scsifibrewin_dwnld.html
1. Follow steps 1-3 of Method 1.
2. Start the STB program & highlight the appropriate drive from Main Screen.
3. From top pull down Menu Navigate to Tape -->Commands -->Firmware Downloads -->HP LTO
Firmware Download. This opens up  a new window.
4. From the opened window browse & locate the '.E' file extracted from patch and hit the 'select' button.
5. Verify the correct drive is selected and confirm the download to complete the  upgrade.
6. Follow steps 8-10 of Method 1.

Method 3 : FW upgrade using tload utility
> 'tlod' utility can be used to update FW over data path when drive is attached to Solaris or Linux hosts.
> May not be available for all the patch releases.
> 'tload.tar' utility is bundled with patch when its supported.
> Follow README file of patch for the step by step update procedure.

Option 4 : FW upgrade using HP FUP Tape
1. Insert the tape which has required FW image into the appropriate drive.
2. During the FW update process, GREEN Ready LED flashes for about 30 seconds, and then returns to a
steady state when the update is complete.
3. Be careful not to reset or power cycle the drive during the update process.
4. If the update image is corrupt or incompatible, the Ready, Drive and Tape error LED's flash until a tape
    load is started.
5. Follow steps 8-10 of Method 1.

NOTE: Under NO circumstances tape drive returns with media still inside are allowed. If a tape is stuck in the drive, contact the Tape HW Support for assistance by an email to tapehw_ww@oracle.com with SR# in the subject line.

CONFIRM THE FIX BY:
Verify the updated FW version is reflected in SLC or CLI

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE:
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Bring the drive online in host application. Verify read/write to drive.

PARTS NOTE:
