DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Knowledge of the C4 library, LTO, SDLT drives
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 2
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW
Need to remove a defective drive from the C4 library.
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?
The drive must be offline to the system hardware and software application
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Refer to the C4 (Quantum PX Field Service Manual) for complete instructions on how to remove/replace defective tape drive from library. The Manual provides complete Pictures, Notes and Cautions that should be used with the following instructions.
NOTE:
Under NO circumstances should tape drives be returned with Media still inside the drive. If a tape is stuck in a drive, review the Knowledge Base or contact Tape Hardware Support for instructions on how to remove the tape with an email to tapehw_ww@oracle.com include the SR/case number in the subject line of the email.
Prior to removal of the tape drive, make sure the drive is offline to the customer's hardware and software application. The drive then needs to be powered down by using either the OCP (Operator Control Panel) or using the remote management GUI. Refer to the Service Manual should you need further instructions.
Tape Drive Removal:
1. Use a flat blade screwdriver to loosen the two thumbscrews on the SCSI sub-plate.
2. Pull the SCSI sub-plate thumbscrews to disconnect the SCSI sub-plate from the drive.
3. Use a flat blade screwdriver to loosen the tape drive thumbscrew.
4. Pull the tape drive out of the library, using the tape drive handle on the left side of the tape drive.
Tape Drive Installation:
1. Remove the SCSI sub-plate from the new tape drive:
a. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the two thumbscrews on the SCSI sub-plate.
b. Pull the SCSI sub-plate handle to disconnect the sub-plate from the drive.
c. Save the SCSI sub-plate.
2. Slowly insert the new tape drive into the library until the connectors are seated.
3. Tighten the tape drive thumbscrew using a flat-blade screwdriver.
4. Install the old SCSI sub-plate (still connected to the SCSI bus) on the new tape drive.
5. Tighten the 2 sub-plate thumbscrews using a flat-blade screwdriver.
6. Return power to the drive by setting the Drive Power option to ON.
7. If the host does not detect the presence of the tape drive, check the drive SCSI ID.
If the drive SCSI ID is:
- Valid, the tape drive may be defective.
- Invalid, the SCSI sub-plate has failed and needs to be replaced.
8. Use a host SCSI program to check the data transfer performance of the drive.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Have customer bring drive back online to the hardware and software application to verify functionality.
