FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4170 M2 Disk Backplane needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow shutdown instructions in Section 1 of DOC ID: 1539451.1

NOTE - 'If this is an Engineered system then the system administrator should prepare the system for service by performing any application related functions required to shutdown the node. This might include but is not limited to performing a system backup, failover of application or services, and finally a system shutdown.'

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Please see following NOTE / document prior to removing any parts:
How to update product serial number on systems which implement Top Level Identifier functionality (Doc ID 1280913.1)

The Backup 2 FRU ID container of the X4170M2 is on the DBP(disk back plane) .
To prevent that we can't enable the sunservice user due to bug 16581800
it is required to verify before and after the DBP replacement that the FRU data on all 3 containers is correct.

FYI - if the FRU data is just correct on 2 containers and was not automatically updated on the 3rd container AND we replace one part with one valid container we would run into bug 16581800. Therefore I recommend to verify the FRU data on all 3 containers BEFORE we start with the DBP replacement. And of course finally AFTER the DBP replacement.

Prepare the server for service.
a. Power off the server and disconnect the power cord (or cords) from the power supply (or supplies).
b. Remove the server from the rack.
c. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
d. Remove the top cover.

Removing Disk Backplane

1. Remove all of the storage drives and the DVD/USB drive from the disk drive cage.
2. Remove the storage drive cage.
3. Remove the two No. 2 Phillips screws securing the disk backplane to the storage drive cage.

4. Slide the backplane down and off the storage drive cage retention hooks.
5. Place the disk backplane on an antistatic mat.

Installing Disk Backplane

1. Slide the backplane under the retention hooks on the storage drive cage
2. Install the two No. 2 Phillips screws that secure the backplane to the storage drive cage.
3. Install the storage drive cage.
4. Install the storage drives and the DVD/USB drive.

Return the server to operation.

a. Install the top cover.
b. Install the server into the rack.
c. Return the server to the normal rack position.
d. Reconnect the power cord (or cords) to the power supply (or supplies) and power on the server.
e. Check for full system functionality

Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow restart instructions in Section 1, step 10 of DOC ID: 1539451.1
