DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
V440/Netra 440 product training.

TIME ESTIMATE: 45 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Disk Fault

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

The operating system should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement.
e.g. The disk may be part of Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas Volume Manager, mounted file-system, hardware RAID or raw partitions, etc.
A data backup may be required to restore data onto a replaced disk.
If a data backup is not required it is still a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge

Note:
Use max post only when searching for IO Controller issues, Fatal Resets, and Unrecoverable Errors(UEs) that Solaris is unable to properly diagnose.  If diag-level is set to max at OBP, confirm with customer that if can be moved to the factory default of min.

See:  Guidance for POST Diagnostic Level Setting on Sun Fire[TM] 280R, V480, V490, V880, V890 and V880z servers. (Doc ID 1582330.1) for details.

If the disk being replaced is part of a hardware RAID set perform the steps in:

Sun Fire[TM] V440 Server: How to Replace a Failed Disk Mirrored with the raidctl Command (Doc ID 1009043.1),  otherwise proceed with the steps below.

1. Unconfigure the hard drive that you intend to remove. e.g.

# cfgadm -la

# cfgadm -c unconfigure c1::dsk/c1t1d0     ###    This is just an example c/t/d number.  Your failed disk may have a different number.

For issues with the cfgadm command see:

Unable to Replace a Failed Disk - cfgadm -c unconfigure : Hardware Specific Failure: Failed to Unconfigure (Doc ID 1506521.1)

2 .Verify that the device is now unconfigured. e.g.

# cfgadm -la

3. Confirm that the hard drive you want to remove from the server is no longer visible to the operating system. e.g.

# format

4. The drive blue LED should now be lit

5. Remove the drive     Be careful NOT to do this too forcibly, as in some situations this may cause the other disk(s) to become unplugged due to the flexing of the backplane in its bracket.

6. Install the new drive. Be careful NOT to do this too forcibly, as in some situations this may cause the other disk(s) to become unplugged due to the flexing of the backplane in its bracket.

7. Configure the newly installed hard drive e.g.

# cfgadm -la

# cfgadm -c configure c1::dsk/c1t1d0    ###   Note c1::dsk/c1t1d0 is just an example actual disk object may be different.

8. Confirm that the drive is now connected and configured. e.g.

# cfgadm -la

# format

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN the SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other.
