How to Remove and Replace a Sun Fire V440 Server PCI Card
Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
Nothing beyond basic hardware skills
TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 1
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Faulty PCI card.
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge
1. Ensure the server is powered off.
2. Ensure that the server is properly grounded.
3. Remove the cover.
4. Disconnect any external cables attached to the faceplate of the PCI card.
5. Disconnect any internal cables connected to the PCI card internal connectors.
6. Remove the Phillips No. 1 screw securing the card to the system back panel.
7. Pull the PCI card from its slot.
8. Insert the replacement PCI card into the appropriate slot on the motherboard.
9. Secure the PCI card faceplate to the system back panel with the Phillips No. 1 screw.
10. If necessary, connect any internal cables to the PCI card internal connectors.
11. If necessary, connect any external cables to the PCI card.
12. Refit the cover.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN the SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Re-boot system and ensure that full PCI card functionality is achieved.
