DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED: General Sun X64 Servers Knowledge
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:DIMM Memory Replacement
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow shutdown instructions in Section 1 of DOC ID: 1539451.1

1. Prepare the server for service.
a. Power off the server and disconnect the power cord(s) from the server power supply(s).

b. Extend the server into the maintenance position.

c. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.

d. Remove the top cover.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Replace the faulty DIMM(s).

a. To identify the location of the faulty DDR3 DIMMs, press the Fault Remind button on the motherboard

b. Note the location of faulty DDR3 DIMMs(identified with a corresponding amber LED).

c. To remove the faulty DIMM do the following:
     i. Rotate both DIMM slot ejectors outward as far as they will go.
ii. Carefully lift the DIMM straight up to remove it from the socket.

d. Replace each faulty DIMM with either another DIMM of the same rank size
(quad rank, dual rank, or single rank) or a DIMM filler panel.

Caution – If you are not immediately inserting a replacement DIMM into the empty DIMM socket, insert a DDR3 DIMM filler panel in the socket to ensure adequate cooling and reduce the possibility of a system shutdown.

Installing DIMM(s).

1. Unpack the replacement DDR3 DIMMs and place them on an antistatic mat.

2. Ensure that the replacement DDR3 DIMMs match the sizes as the DDR3 DIMMs they are replacing.

Caution – You must not replace a dual-rank DIMM with a quad-rank DIMM and vice versa.

     a. Install the DIMMs

     b. Ensure that the ejector tabs are in the open position.Line up the replacement DIMM with the     connector.

     c. Push the DDR3 DIMM into the connector until the ejector tabs lock the DIMM in place.

Caution – If the DIMM does not easily seat into the connector, verify that the notch in the DIMM is aligned with the key in the connector. If the notch is not aligned, damage to the DIMM might occur.

3. Repeat Step b until all replacement DDR3 DIMMs are installed.

4. Return the server to operation.

     a. Install the top cover.

     b. Return the server to the normal rack position.

     c. Reconnect the power cord (s) to the server power supply (s) and power on the server.

5. Clear the DIMM Fault from the ILOM

     a. Log in to the server as root using the Oracle ILOM CLI.

     b. view the server faults using the "show /SP/faultmgmt" command, for example:

      -> show /SP/faultmgmt
      SP/faultmgmt
      Targets:
      0 (/SYS/MB/P0/D2)
      Properties:
      Commands:
      cd
      show

     c. clear the DIMM fault by setting the clear_fault_action to true for the DIMM that was replaced (use the target listed in the previous output), for example:

      -> set /SYS/MB/P0/D2 clear_fault_action=true

     d. confirm that all addressed faults have been cleared by using the "show /SP/faultmgmt" command again.

     e. ensure that the system is in working order and that the customer issue has been addressed.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Adhere to the memory population rules

1.Install the first three DIMMs in CPU0 and CPU1 slots D8, D5, and D2.

2.Install the second three DIMMs in CPU0 and CPU1 slots D7, D4, and D1.

3.Use of the same DIMM size and speed is recommended for maximum performance.

Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow restart instructions in Section 1, step 10 of DOC ID: 1539451.1
