Goal

How to Replace a Sun Fire X4170 M2 Power Distribution Board Ribbon Cable.

Solution

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Replacement Power Distribution Board Cable
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow shutdown instructions in Section 1 of DOC ID: 1539451.1

NOTE - 'If this is an Engineered system then the system administrator should prepare the system for service by performing any application related functions required to shutdown the node. This might include but is not limited to performing a system backup, failover of application or services, and finally a system shutdown.'


Prepare the server for service.
a. Power off the server and disconnect the power cord/s from the power supply/s.
b. Extend the server to the maintenance position.
c. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
d. Remove the top cover.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Removing.

Remove the existing power distribution board cable. The power distribution board cable connects between the power distribution
board and the motherboard.
a. Release the latches on both sides of the cable connector on the power distribution board and pull the cable straight up .
b. Release the latches on both sides of the cable connector on the motherboard and pull the cable straight up.

Installing

Install Power Distribution Board Cable. The power distribution board cable connects between the power distribution board and the motherboard.
1. Install the power distribution board cable.
a. Ensure that the latches on the power distribution board connector are in the open position and connect ribbon cable to the connector.
Ensure that the ribbon cable connector is seated properly.
b. Ensure that the latches on the motherboard connector are in the open position and connect ribbon cable to the connector.
Ensure that the ribbon cable connector is seated properly.
2. Return the server to operation.
a. Install the top cover.
b. Return the server to the normal rack position.
c. Reconnect the power cord (or cords) to the power supply (or supplies) and power on the server.
Verify that the AC Present LED is lit.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Restart the server and check all devices are working.
