How to Replace a Sun Fire X4170, X4270 Motherboard.

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
Sun Fire X4170, X4270 Training

TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 3

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4170, X4270 Motherboard needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Shut down system and Power down the server.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures
1. Power off the server and unplug (REMOVE) the power cords from power supplies
2. Remove the top cover
3. For 4270 remove the plastic air baffle
4. Disconnect the storage drive data cables from the SAS PCIe card or the motherboard SATA connectors
5. Remove the memory dimms from the motherboard
6. Remove the PCIe risers and PCIe cards from the motherboard
7. Remove the CPU modules from the motherboard
8. Remove the compact flash card
9. Disconnect the power distribution board ribbon cable
10. Remove the four screws that hold the motherboard to the bus bar
11. Loosen the green captive screw on the front of the motherboard that secure it to the chassis
12. Carefully slide the motherboard to the back of the chassis and lift out using the finger loop which is below the four screws that hold the motherboard to the bus bar.
13. Carefully install the replacement motherboard into the chassis and push to the front of the chassis
14. Insert the four screws that secure the motherboard to the bus bar
15. Tighten the green captive on the front of the motherboard to secure it to the chassis
16. Re-install the memory dimms
17. Re-install the CPU modules
18. Re-install the compact flash card
19. Re-install the PCIe risers and PCIe cards
20. Re-connect the power distribution board ribbon cable to the motherboard
21. Connect the storage drive data cables to the the storage drive cage
22. For 4270 re-install the air baffle
23. Replace the top/main cover
24. Re-connect the power cords
25. Re-program serial number into FRUID
26. Update ILOM to latest serial number

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot up system and verify full functionality


PARTS NOTE: Ensure the socket covers are installed on the old motherboard before packaging.
Document any socket damage observed on the return tag.
