How to Replace a Sun Fire X4170, X4270, X4275 PCIe Riser Card.

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TIME ESTIMATE: 45 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4170, X4270, X4275 PCIe Riser Card needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

Note: Please refer to DOC ID: 1539451.1 for instructions to shutdown a database node or DOC ID: 1188080.1 for instructions to shutdown a storage cell.


Then power down the system and disconnect the Power Cord.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
1. Power off the server and disconnect the power cord (or cords) from the power supply (or supplies).
2. Slide the server out of the rack.
3. Remove the top cover.
4. Disconnect any data cables connected to the PCIe card on the PCIe riser being removed.
Note ! Label the cables to ensure proper connection later.
5. Remove the back panel crossbar
6. Disconnect any internal cables connected to the PCIe card installed in the riser
Note ! Label the cables to ensure proper connection later.
7. Loosen the captive Phillips screw on the end of the riser
8. Lift up the riser and the PCIe card attached to it, if any, as a unit and place on an anti-static mat
9. Transfer the PCIe card to the new PCI riser card

Installation is the reverse of the above procedure

1. Install the top cover.
2. Install the server into the rack.
3. Power on


OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Check for full system functionality

Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow restart instructions in Section 1, step 10 of DOC ID: 1539451.1 for a database node or instructions in step 7 of DOC ID: 1188080.1 for a storage cell.
