How to Remove and Replace VLE Server Power Supply Backplane

Solution

CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Failed Power Supply Backplane

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:

VLE, ZFS, Solaris and Sun X64 Training

TIME ESTIMATE: 150 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 4

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS :
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
- The system supplies power to the power board even when the server is shut down. To avoid personal injury or damage the server, you must disconnect power cords before servicing the power distribution board.
- Data backup is recommended as a precaution.

- Quiesce all IO between VTSS and the VLE storage appliance and shutdown the server.

To quiesce IO between VTSS and the VLE storage appliance, vary offline all of the VL-RTDs. With
the VL-RTDs offline, no migrations will occur. If a VTV is being migrated at the time, it should be
allowed to complete. VTVs queued to be migrated will remain queued. That may result in some
repetitive error messages from VTCS (e.g. no RTDs available).

- Depending on how long the VLE will be offline, customers can choose to live with the messages or they can change applicable management classes to a temporary management class that doesn't require immediate migration. When the VLE is available again, change the management class back to the original.

- To shutdown the VLE server, issue the following commands after login:

PLEASE NOTE:
These instructions were written for earlier versions of VLE code and threrefore instructions that must be run with root privileges are prefaced with the 'pfexec' command.  Newer versions of code do not use 'pfexec'.  If you are running more current VLE code then instead of using 'pfexec' preface these kinds of commands with 'sudo'.

# pfexec sync
# pfexec sync
# pfexec init 5

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Remove the Power Supply Backplane
1. Prepare for servicing:
a. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
b. Power off the server and disconnect all power cords from the server power supplies.
c. Extend the server to maintenance position.
d. Remove the top cover.
2. Pull both power supplies at least part way out of the chassis, to disconnect them from the power supply backplane.
3. Remove memory riser or filler panel closest to the air divider.
4. Remove air divider by pulling it up and out of chassis.
5. Remove ribbon cable connecting the power supply backplane to the motherboard.
6. Remove the screw holding the power supply cover in place and remove the cover.
7. Remove the motherboard.
8. Disconnect the AC cables from power supply backplane.
9. Lift the power supply backplane out of chassis .
10. Unpack the replacement power supply backplane and place it on an antistatic mat.
11. Hold the power supply backplane at the end of the power supply cage and connect the AC cables to the AC connectors on the power supply backplane. (Ensure that the AC cable on the right must be connected to the AC connector on the right, and the AC cable on the left must be connected to the AC connector on the left).
12. Insert power supply backplane into position by ensuring that the tabs on the power board slide onto the hooks on power supply cage.
13. Install motherboard.
14. Replace power supply cover and fasten it in place with the screw.
15. Reconnect the ribbon cable from motherboard to the power supply backplane. 16. Reinstall air divider by sliding it into the chassis.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Verify functionality, no service LEDs or messages. Verify via ipmitool output.
Gather and upload explorer.

PARTS NOTE:
The product serial number used for service entitlement and warranty coverage might need to be reprogrammed on the fan board by authorized service personnel with the correct product serial number located on the chassis EZ label.
