How to Remove and Replace VLE Server PCIe (SAS Adapter or NIC) Card
Solution
CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Faulty or defective PCI Card (SAS Adapter or NIC Card)
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?)
VLE, ZFS, Solaris and Sun X64 Training
TIME ESTIMATE: 150 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 2
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Data backup not required but recommended as a precaution
Quiesce all IO between VTSS and the VLE storage appliance and shutdown the server.
To quiesce IO between VTSS and the VLE storage appliance, vary offline all of the VL-RTDs. With
the VL-RTDs offline, no migrations will occur. If a VTV is being migrated at the time, it should be
allowed to complete. VTVs queued to be migrated will remain queued. That may result in some
repetitive error messages from VTCS (e.g. no RTDs available).
Depending on how long the VLE will be offline, customers can choose to live with the messages or they can change applicable management classes to a temporary management class that doesn't require immediate migration. When the VLE is available again, change the management class back to the original.
To shutdown the VLE server, issue the following commands after login:
PLEASE NOTE:
These instructions were written for earlier versions of VLE code and threrefore instructions that must be run with root privileges are prefaced with the 'pfexec' command. Newer versions of code do not use 'pfexec'. If you are running more current VLE code then instead of using 'pfexec' preface these kinds of commands with 'sudo'.
# pfexec sync
# pfexec sync
# pfexec init 5
Power down the system.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Remove a PCIe Card.
Locate the PCIe card that you want to remove.
If necessary, make a note of where the PCIe cards are installed.
Unplug all data cables from the PCIe card.Note the location of all cables for reinstallation later.
Disengage the PCIe card slot crossbar from its locked position and rotate the crossbar into an upright position
Carefully remove the PCIe card from the PCIe card slot.
Dikkat - Whenever you remove a PCIe card, you should replace it with another PCIe card or a filler panel; otherwise, the server might overheat due to improper airflow.
Install a PCIe Card.
Return the PCIe card slot crossbar to its closed and locked position.
Return the server to operation:
Install the top cover.
Return the server to the normal rack position.
Reconnect all power cords to the server power supplies and power on the server.
If the PCIe card being installed is replacing a faulty PCIe card, manually clear the PCIe card fault using Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM).For instructions on clearing server faults, refer to the Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) 3.0 Supplement for Sun Fire X4470 Server (821-0702).
To clean up any dangling /dev links connect to the server via putty and run the following command: sudo devfsadm- Cv
Refer to the documentation shipped with the PCIe card for information about configuring the PCIe card, including installing required operating systems. http://www.lsi.com/support/sun
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Verify access to the new PCI card and any peripheral attached to PCI card
PARTS NOTE:
For the SAS Adapter, Firmware should be at least 1.9.2. If not, /kernel/drv/pmcs.conf will need to modified to force a firmware update, then changed back to disable firmware updates (the base operational mode).
