How to Replace a Sun Fire X4170, X4270 Connector Board (Paddle Card).

No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4170, X4270 Connector Board (Paddle Card) needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS
A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.

Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow shutdown instructions in Section 1 of DOC ID: 1539451.1


- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Powering off the system and disconnect the power cords from the system

2. Remove the top cover

3. Remove the Motherboard assembly (X4170 ONLY)

4. Remove the power distribution board

5. Remove the fan power boards

6. Remove the paddle card connector board

7. Install new paddle card connector board

8. Install the fan power boards

9. Install the power distribution board

10. Install the Motherboard assembly (X4170 ONLY)

11. Install the top cover

12. Connect the power cords and power on the system

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot up system and verify full functionality
