Goal

How to Replace a Sun Fire X4170 Power Distribution Board.

Solution

- TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Failed/Faulty Power Distribution Board
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS
A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.

Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow shutdown instructions in Section 1 of DOC ID: 1539451.1


- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:


1. Power off the server and unplug (REMOVE) the power cords from power supplies
2. Remove the top cover
3. Remove the motherboard assembly
4. Remove the power supplies by grasping the handle, pressing the release latch and pulling the power supply
5. Disconnect the top chassis intrusion switch cable from the Power Distribution Board
6. Remove the 2 screws that hold the Power Distribution Board to the chassis
7. Using the bus bar pull the Power Distribution Board bus bar assembly to the right, away from the paddle card
8. Lift the Power Distribution Board bus bar assembly up and out of the chassis
9. Install the replacement Power Distribution Board into the chassis (should fit/align with mushroom standoffs on chassi)
10. Slide the Power Distribution Board bus bar assembly to the left until it plugs into the paddle card
11. Install and tighten the 2 screws to the chassis to secure the board
12. Reconnect the top cover chassis intrusion switch cable to the Power Distribution Board
13. Re-insert the power supplies and ensure they align correctly in the bay and lock in place
14. Re-install the motherboard assembly
15. Replace the main cover
16. Re-connect the power cords

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot up system and verify full functionality
