How to Remove and Replace a SE 6580/6780 DIMM using CAM

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
SUN StorEdge 6x80 Array Install/Config & Maintenance training

  TIME ESTIMATE: 150 minutes

  TASK COMPLEXITY: 3

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
  PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Cache DIMM has failed or identified as faulty

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
Array RAID Controller identified should have been placed offline by the customer, in preparation for the visit.

The Blue led on the controller holding the DIMM should be lit

7-Segment Display should be flashing with one of the following codes, indicating that the controller is offline:

SE+ dF+ dash+ CF+ Cx (where x is the slot that's failed)

OS+ OL (held in reset)

SE+ 88+ (held in reset)

SE+ L2+ dash+ CF+ Cx (where x is the slot that's failed)

SE+ L8+ dahs+ CF+ Cx (where x is the slot that's failed)

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

NOTE: If ASR is enabled, it should be deactivated temporarily before servicing the equipment so that additional unnecessary Service Requests are not created.

DEACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.10: ASR is automatically deactivated when you select "Reserve the tray for maintenance" in Service Advisor, and it is reactivated when you select "Release the tray from maintenance" in Service Advisor.

DEACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER: Before proceeding with the part replacement:

1. Log into CAM.
2. Go to "Storage Systems" -> [your arrayname] -> "Administration" -> "Array Health Monitoring".
3. Uncheck the box "Enable ASR for this array" under the section "Monitoring for This Array". If the box is already unchecked, there is no action required. Remember the status however, as it will matter in step 3 of REACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER below.
4. Click on "Save" if you have unchecked the box in step 3 above.

1. Verify that the controller is offline with the customer, or by checking the status using Common Array Manager.
2. Use the service advisor to get access to the instructions for replacing a failed DIMM.
WARNING!!
The controller can only be removed for 15 minutes due to cooling issues. Suggest setting a timer for 10 minutes. If the alarm goes off, put the cover plate back on the controller, and insert into the module for 5 minutes. Even with the CBD missing, this allows the module to cool, but the controller will not boot.

Select the Array in CAM
Click the Service Advisor button
Scroll down to and expand the Service Only section for Cache Memory Card Removal/Replacement
Click on the DIMM being replaced
Enter service password: standard Service Only password for CAM. TSC will have it.
NOTE: If the DIMM in question is not available, you can click on an Available DIMM, and complete instructions 6-19.

3. On insertion of the controller, review the 7-Segment display for any additional codes.
If SE+ L8+ dash+ CF+ Cx(repeating), the DIMM in the slot you replaced is loose OR is of the wrong size OR you have inserted a DIMM into the wrong slot.

If SE+ 88+(repeating), have the customer online the controller.

If 01(static), the controller is booting, wait 10 minutes or call TSC.

If 99(static), the controller is optimal.

Report blinking codes other than the above to the TSC.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Verify with the customer that:
1. alarms for Controller is Offline, are no longer present. (online controller)
2. alarms for Not on Preferred Path are addressed by redistributing the volumes
3. controller stays in an optimal state for longer than 5 minutes
4. The DIMM status is OK/Optimal

REACTIVATING ASR with CAM 6.10: ASR is automatically deactivated when you select "Reserve the tray for maintenance" in Service Advisor, and it is reactivated when you select "Release the tray from maintenance" in Service Advisor. If ASR was not enabled before beginning this procedure, selecting "Release the tray from maintenance" will not activate it.

REACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER: After proceeding with the part replacement:

1. Log into CAM.
2. Go to "Storage Systems" -> [your arrayname] -> "Administration" -> "Array Health Monitoring".
3. Check the box "Enable ASR for this array" under the section "Monitoring for This Array". Do this ONLY if you unchecked the box in step 3 of DEACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER. If you found the box was unchecked, leave it unchecked now.
4. Click on "Save" if you have checked the box to reactivate ASR.
