DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?)
VLE, ZFS, Solaris and Sun X64 Training
TASK COMPLEXITY: 4
Time Estimate: 2.5 hours
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Failed CPU or suspected defective CPU
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Quiesce all IO between VTSS and the VLE storage appliance and shutdown the server.
To quiesce IO between VTSS and the VLE storage appliance, vary offline all of the VL-RTDs. With
the VL-RTDs offline, no migrations will occur. If a VTV is being migrated at the time, it should be
allowed to complete. VTVs queued to be migrated will remain queued. That may result in some
repetitive error messages from VTCS (e.g. no RTDs available).
Depending on how long the VLE will be offline, customers can choose to live with the messages or they can change applicable management classes to a temporary management class that doesn't require immediate migration. When the VLE is available again, change the management class back to the original.
To shutdown the VLE server, issue the following commands after login:
PLEASE NOTE:
These instructions were written for earlier versions of VLE code and threrefore instructions that must be run with root privileges are prefaced with the 'pfexec' command. Newer versions of code do not use 'pfexec'. If you are running more current VLE code then instead of using 'pfexec' preface these kinds of commands with 'sudo'.
# pfexec sync
# pfexec sync
# pfexec init 5
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Caution: These procedures require that you handle components that are sensitive to static discharge. This sensitivity can cause the component to fail.
1. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
2. Power off the server and remove power cords.
3. Loosen the two captive screws holding the heat-sink filler panel in place.
4. Lift the heat-sink filler panel out of the chassis.
5. If you are installing a CPU into a CPU socket where a CPU has never been
installed, remove the CPU cover plate:
5.1. Disengage the CPU release lever by pushing down and moving it to the side away from the CPU socket, and then rotating the lever upward.
5.2. Open the load plate and carefully remove the CPU cover plate.
6. If the CPU LED behind the CPU on the motherboard is on (amber): CPU is
faulty and should be replaced.
7. Remove the CPU:
7.1 Disengage the CPU release lever by pushing down and moving it to the side away from the CPU, and then rotating the lever upward.
7.2. Open the load plate and carefully remove the CPU.
8. If applicable, install the CPU
8.1 Unpack the installation kit.
■ CPU and pre-greased heat-sink
■ Pre-greased heat-sink only
■ CPU only, with syringe to apply thermal grease to existing heat-sink
8.2 Properly orient the CPU with the socket alignment tabs and carefully place the CPU into the socket.
8.3 Lower the load plate and Engage the release lever by rotating it downward and slipping it under the catch.
8.4 Install the heat-sink.
9. Return the server to operation
9.1 Install the top cover.
9.2 Power on the server.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Login into SP and validate CPUs are seen or via IPMItool
Bring up system and check all CPUs are visible
