DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Trained on maintenance of 9840 tape drive.
Time Estimate: 60 minutes
Task Complexity: 2
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?
9840 Drive needs to be offline from the Software application and Server.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Prior to physically removing jammed /stuck cartridge, make sure the following actions have been taken to avoid any unnecessary steps:
· In environments that utilize ACSLS or HSC, a forced dismount command has been issued to the drive in question.
· The drive in question has been reset/power cycled AFTER being placed offline by the host. Make sure the tape did a rewind and unload completely. The time to complete this unload may vary depending on how much tape was on the machine reel.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Refer to the 9840 Service Manual for further details on the actions below.

T9840 Jammed Cartridge
A jammed cartridge in a T9840 Tape Drive is not a common malfunction. However, you must know how to remove jammed cartridges when the malfunction occurs. Follow the procedures in this section to remove a jammed cartridge.
See Figure 7-2 for the T9840 Tape Drive MUD screw location. The MUD screw is located on the right-front side of the drive.
Note:
1 .The MUD screw is used only to remove a jammed cartridge or to reset the drive for shipping.
2. The MUD screw must be turned clockwise to remove jammed cartridges.
3. The MUD screw must be turned counter-clockwise to reset the tape carriage to its shipping position.
4. The tape carriage must be in the shipping position to install and lock the shipping insert into the drive.
1. Locate the MUD screw on the drive.
Note: The T9840 Tape Drive MUD screw is located on the right-front side of the drive.
2. Obtain a common screwdriver and insert it into the MUD slot.
3. Press against the spring-loaded MUD screw until it stops.
CAUTION:
MECHANICAL DAMAGE. If the MUD screw will not turn clockwise or is very hard to turn, the loader mechanism is defective. DO NOT FORCE the MUD screw.
4. Slowly turn the screwdriver clockwise to move the cartridge into the Unloaded position.
Note:When the MUD screw will not turn any further clockwise, the reel motors should be lowered and the cartridge should be in the Unloaded position.
If the cartridge is not in the Unload position, the drive must be replaced.
See steps 7 and 8.
5. Remove the screwdriver.
6. Remove the cartridge from the T9840 Tape Drive.
Note:If the cartridge still can not be removed, the drive must be replaced.
7. If the customer will relinquish the jammed tape cartridge, replace the drive; then, package the defective drive, as is with the jammed cartridge, for shipment.
8. If the customer will NOT relinquish the jammed tape cartridge, open a Service Request and contact Tape Hardware Support for additional instructions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once the media cartridge has been removed from the tape drive (by either the above actions or the following physical procedure), please run load/unload tests to verify the drive is still operational.
Inspect the removed cartridge for possible physical damage to the case, file reel sprocket, leader pin/block, and/or the media itself according to the type of media being worked with.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Bring the tape drive back online to the operating system and software application. Verify the customer is able to access the drive.
