DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?: No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: hard drive failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
NOTE: This is a hot service procedure that can be performed by customers while the server is running. The drive must be taken offline before it is removed. If it cannot be taken offline, the OS must be shut down to prevent running programs from attempting to use it.

NOTE: When a drive is part of a RAID volume, you do not need to unconfigure it before swapping it with a new drive. When replacing a failed drive in a hardware RAID volume, follow the Netra T5440 RAID Drive procedures at: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19874-01/820-4443-11/chapter3.html#d0e7384

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:

For Removing a Hard Drive
1. Press the green tabs on either side of the bezel and pull forward and down.
2. Identify the location of the hard drive that you want to remove.
3. If the disk is not in a RAID volume, type the Solaris OS commands required to stop using the hard drive.

  • # cfgadm -al
  • # cfgadm -c unconfigure "drive name"

4. On the drive you plan to remove, push the latch release button

For Installing a Hard Drive (Please wait 2 minutes prior inserting the replacement HDD if it is controlled by an Adaptec RAID controller)
1. Remove the replacement hard drive from its packaging and place it on an antistatic mat.
2. Align the replacement drive to the drive slot.  The hard drive is physically addressed according to the slot in which it is installed. It is important to install a replacement drive in the same slot as the drive that was removed.
3. Slide the drive into the bay until it is fully seated
4. Close the latch to lock the drive in place.
5. Close the bezel.
6. Perform administrative tasks to reconfigure the hard drive if not in a RAID volume.

  • # cfgadm -al
  • # cfgadm -c configure "drive name"

6a.  An Adaptec RAID volume will automatically be reconfigured or made a hot spare, but a simple-volume must be recreated as follows (GUI could also be used):

  • ./arcconf CREATE 1 LOGICALDRIVE MAX Simple_volume 0 10    (or the associated physical device)

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:
Power on the server, check functionality and restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
