How to Replace a Sun Fire X4540 CPU Module.

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
Sun Fire X4540 Training

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4540 CPU Module needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

Then power down the system and disconnect the Power Cord.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

0- CPU Fault Indicators

System Controller Fault LED Off: CPU and DIMMs functioning properly. On (amber): CPU or DIMM is faulty
CPU fault LEDs on CPU0 or CPU1:On (amber): CPU is faulty and must be replaced
CPU fault and DIMM LEDs continue to indicate a failure until system is powered up. Battery LED continues to indicate a failure until service processor is started.

1- Replace CPU

Power off server
Remove cable management arm
Remove system controller ( CPUs are located inside )
Identify CPU module you are replacing, CPU 0 or CPU 1 ( labeled )
Remove the heat sink for the faulty CPU. Loosen 1 screw 2 to 3 turns then loosen the other 2 to 3 turns. Gently twist heat sink and pull it off
Clean heat sink. Use included alcohol pad to remove thermal grease
Remove CPU pulling the socket release lever out and up
Unpack new CPU. Install new CPU, or reinstall existing CPU. Use identical CPUs. If re-using existing heatsink, clean and regrease it.
Align CPU to socket
Pivot release lever down
Ensure that foam strip under heat sink area is intact
Carefully position the heat sink onto the CPU(The heatsink is not symmetrical must be aligned before you place it)
Reinstall heat sink
Return system controller cove
Replace cable management arms and return system controller to server

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
