How to Replace a Sun Fire X4440 Internal SAS Cable.

Solution

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4440 Internal SAS Cable needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

1. Power off server
2. Disconnect power cords from power supply

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Slide server out of rack
2. Attach an antistatic wrist strap
3. Remove top cover
4. Remove mezzanine tray
5. Remove air duct
6. Remove fan modules
7. Remove fan power boards

Removing Drive Cables in a SAS Configuration

1. Untwist cable tiedowns to release cables.
2. Remove mezzanine tray support bracket from power supply bay wall.
3. Remove cables.
4. Press latch.
5. Push cable in.
6. While keeping latch pressed, pull cable out.
7. Caution - Failure to follow this step can result in cables not being removed, or damage to backplane, HBA adapter, or SATA connectors on motherboard.
8. Pull cables through mid-wall.
9. Avoid damaging air blocker.
10. Lift cables out of chassis.

Installing Drive Cables into a SAS Configuration

1. To install two hard drive cables, Disk 0-3 and Disk 4-7 in a SAS configuration
2. Thread PB end of cables underneath midwall, towards drives backplane
3. Connect connector labeled PB 0, 1, 2, and 3 to connector furthest from power supply
4. Connect connector labeled PB 4, 5, 6, and 7 to connector nearest to power supply
5. Reinstall fan boards, making sure cable is not pinched.
6. The cable routes through slot underneath of fan boards.
7. Route cable towards power supply bay, and over notch in vertical power supply unit backplane.
8. The cable then dips slightly to run underneath ribs on Mezzanine Tray support bracket.
9. Reinstall the mezzanine tray.
10. Install SAS HBA card in PCIe slot 0.
11. Lower card on riser is closest to power supply wall.
12. Install connector labeled MB 0, 1, 2, and 3 into port 0 of SAS HBA card, closest to the gold fingers
13. Install the connector labeled MB 4, 5, 6, and 7 into port 1 of SAS HBA card, furthest from the gold fingers
14. Reinstall fan power boards.
15. Replace air duct.
16. Reinstall Mezzanine Tray.
17. Install fan modules.
18. Install top cover
19. Install server into rack

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:Return the server to operation.
