Solution

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:

TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4440 CPU needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Power off the server.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Preparing for Servicing Processor

1.1 Power Off Server. Disconnect power cord(s) from the power supply(ies)

1.2 Slide server out of rack

1.3 Attach an antistatic wrist strap

When servicing or removing server components, attach antistatic strap to your wrist and then to a metal area on chassis

1.4 Remove top cover

1.5 Remove mezzanine tray

1.5.1 Unlock two mezzanine tray tabs by pressing away from mezzanine tray

1.5.2 Grab handles and rotate handles towards center of mezzanine tray

1.5.3 Lift mezzanine tray up

1.5.4 Set mezzanine tray aside

2. Removing Processor

2.1 Identify which processor remove : Processor 0 is closest to PSU bay. If it's a faulty processor, press the remind button

2.2 Unscrew the two heatsink screws

2.3 Twist heatsink slightly to break seal with grease, and then lift off heatsink

2.4 Disengage the lever by rotating upward

2.6 Remove processor. careful not to contact gold fingers within socket.

3. Installing Processor

3.1 Remove heat sink on top of failed CPU. Each screw must be turned no more than one 1/2 turn before moving over to other screw and doing same. Continue to turn each screw one 1/2 turn, moving back and forth between two screws until both screws are removed.

3.2 Remove failed Processor

3.3 Clean off old thermal interface material from the heat sink and CPU, using supplied alcohol wipe.

3.4 Set heat sink aside.

3.5 Place new processor in the socket.

3.6 Engage lever by rotating downward and pressing it into catch

3.7 Smooth grease into thin even layer on top of processor

3.8 Using supplied grease syringe, empty syringe on to CPU in a star shaped pattern

3.9 Tighten screws alternately one 1/2 turn until fully seated

3.10 Orient heat sink so that two screws line up with mounting inserts

3.11 Tighten two screws alternately one half turn until fully seated.

3.12 Reinstall mezzanine tray

4. Return Server to Operation

4.1 Install top cover

4.2 Install server into rack

4.3 Reconnect power cord(s) to the power suppl(ies). Verify AC Present LED is lit

4.4 Power on the server

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Restart system and have the System administrator verify functionality of system.
