TASK COMPLEXITY: 1
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4470 CPU Heatsink needs replacement
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Use of Solaris FM commands such as :
# fmdump -v
# fmadm clear <UUID> if Solaris is the installed OS and if fmdump -v reports a faulty DIMM for the
date of fault reported by the Customer/Sun Support engineer.
Also a clean shutdown is required. Leave this to the customer unless agreed otherwise.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
0. Make sure it is possible to completely pull out the server out of its rack, if racked.
It may imply to remove some network cables or optical fibers.
Best is to write down a simple wiring diagram prior to beginning the replacement operation.
Also make sure of the LOCATION of the CPU whose heatsink is to be replaced.
1. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
2. Shutdown of the host, make sure the host is powered off
3. Remove the power cords.
4. Unscrew the two Phillips screws from the heatsink.
5. Twist the heatsink slightly to break the grease seal, lift off the heatsink and
place it upside down on a flat surface to prevent the thermal grease from
contaminating other components.
6. Use an alcohol pad to clean the thermal grease from both the bottom of the
heatsink and the top of the CPU.
7. Whenever you remove a heatsink, always you should replace it with another
heatsink or a filler panel; otherwise, the server might overheat due to improper
airflow.
8. If you are reusing an existing cleaned heatsink, use the syringe (supplied
with the new or replacement CPU) to apply thermal grease on top of the
CPU.
9. Make sure of the orientation of the heatsink and gently place the heatink above the CPU.
10.Tighten the four screws alternately one 1/2 turn in an X pattern until fully
seated.
11. Put back in place the power cords.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
1. Boot up the server.
2. Monitor and check the messages file (if Solaris or Linux) under usual load by the server to check
CPU temperatures are normal.
