Goal

To answer to compatibility question with IBM's new z196 system.

Solution

At this time there are no known issues with compatibility of VSM and IBM z196. Please contact VSM support for further details.

Additional info from VSM engineering (Internal use Only):

There have been a lot of questions about whether Oracle supports the various Tape Products on the new Z196 processors. Here is what is known:

We have run Ficon Express8 cards with z10-BC-E10 with z/OS 1.11(this includes VSM5)-Performance only

We are now beginning to get questions about whether Oracle suppors the various Tape Products on the IBM ZEC 12 processors. Here is what is known about that processor:

As of this update (January 12, 2015) IBM has not yet released the ZEC 12 processors although they may be in test in a few customer sites.
Our internal processes to procure an IBM ZEC 12 processor after it is released are already underway.
Actual test results against this new processor are not expected until mid-year 2015 or possibly later - dependant on many factors.
The intent is to update this knowledge document once test results are available.
