How to Replace a Sun Fire X4140 CPU.

Solution

CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Replace a X4140 Processor

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?)
Familiarity or training for X4470 platform

TASK COMPLEXITY: 3

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Power off the server.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Preparing for Servicing Processor

1.1 Disconnect power cord(s) from the power supply(ies)

1.2 Slide server out of rack

1.3 Attach an antistatic wrist strap

When servicing or removing server components, attach antistatic strap to your wrist and then to a metal area on chassis

1.4 Remove top cover

2. Removing Processor

2.1 Identify which processor remove : Processor 0 is closest to PSU bay

2.2 Unscrew the two heatsink screws

2.3 Twist heatsink slightly to break seal with grease, and then lift off heatsink

2.4 Disengage lever by pushing down and moving to side, then rotating upward

2.5 Open pressure frame

2.6 Remove processor

2.7 Place removed processor in anti-static package

3. Installing Processor

3.1 Clean off old thermal interface material from heatsink and processor, using supplied alcohol wipe

3.2 Set heat sink aside

3.3 Place new processor in socket.Make sure orientation is correct

3.4 Lower pressure plate. Make sure pressure plate sits flat around periphery of processor.

3.5 Engage the lever by rotating downward and slipping under the catch

3.6 Using supplied grease syringe, empty syringe on to processor in star shaped pattern

3.7 Smooth grease into thin even layer on top of processor

3.8 Orient heatsink so that two screws line up with mounting studs

If XOption Processor : Tighten screws alternately one 1/2 turn until fully seated

3.9 Tighten screws alternately one-half turn until fully seated

4. Return Server to Operation

4.1 Install top cover

4.2 Install server into rack

4.3 Reconnect power cord(s) to the power suppl(ies). Verify AC Present LED is lit

4.4 Power on the server

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Restart system and have the System administrator verify functionality of system.
