DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure
TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 0
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4600 HBA Card needs replacement
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
As usual with any HBA replacement, other changes in system may be needed.
For instance, replacing a network interface may impact everything based on MAC addresses. Take explorer prior to hardware operation. This kind of replacement implies a complete production stop on server.
WHAT ACTION DOES ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Make sure about location of HAB to be replaced.
If Solaris OS, pay attention to outputs of following commands :
# fmadm faulty
# fmdump -v
There are situations when HBA card is to be replaced W/OUT any Solaris FMA notifications
Recommendation is to make a short diagram of all installed PCI cards & corresponding connected cables
STEPS :
1. Shutdown of host, make sure host is powered off
2. Remove power cords
3. Pull out server
4. Remove its top cover
5. Note accurate location of PCI card to be replaced
PCI0 = PCIX 100MHz
PCI1 = PCIX 100MHz
PCI2 = PCIE 8-lane
PCI3 = PCIE 8-lane
PCI5 = PCIE 8-lane
PCI6 = PCIE 8-lane
PCI7 = PCIE 4-lane
PCI4 = PCIE 4-lane
6. Unplug cables from card
7. Carefully remove PCI card from riser board connector.
8. Place PCI card on an antistatic mat&write down both PN&SN
THEN NEW PART installation instructions :
10. Unpack replacement PCI card & place it on an antistatic mat
Write down both PN & SN
11. If necessary, replace long bracket by provided short one
12. Insert PCI card into correct slot onto mainboard
12a.Working from rear of chassis, pivot PCI card latch for slot open to receive new PCI card
12b. Insert PCI card into PCI card slot. Ensure that PCI card's rear connector panel engages tab in chassis rear panel
12c. Pivot PCI card latch closed over rear connector panel of PCI card until lever locks into notch in chassis back panel
13. Replace top cover, push in server into its racks, reconnect all unpluggued cables, then
14. Put back in place power cords
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
A. Check new part is recognized during BIOS bootup process
B. Check that newly installed card is correctly recognized by OS
C. If OS is Solaris, and FMA was involved in failure detection of card,
run fmadm commands to update FMA internal databases
D. If necessary, perform any additional step of reconfiguration due to presence
of new card (for instance,if this is a network card, it may be necessary to modify /etc/ethers file)
