DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Sun StorEdge 3000 Series Training
TASK COMPLEXITY: 3
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
Failed or defective controller in dual controller configuration array
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Extractor/Explorers have been provided
Ensure customer has backups
Suspend all Host I/O activity
Keep array powered on
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Check & verify amber LED on controller
Serial port access to controller to validate type of controller failure or issues listed in event log
Verify array health via extractor or sccli - any undetected HW issues may lead to further problems during replacement process
1. Leave array powered on
2. Connect to serial port & save NVRAM configuration to disk
Main Menu -> system Functions -> ctrlr maintenance -> save nvram to disks
3. If both controllers are active, Force fail controller to be replaced
Main Menu -> View and edit Peripheral Devices -> Set Peripheral Device Entry -> Redundant Ctrlr Primary -> Force [Primary / Secondary] Controller. Select appropriate controller (Primary or Secondary)
4. Verify amber LED on failed controller
5. Label & remove cables
6. Unscrew controller from chassis & remove controller by pulling it out.
7. Install new controller & tighten thumbscrews until finger tight. Reattach cables. This controller will automatically become Secondary ctrlr. LED will remain amber until crossload process completes (about 10 min) where new controller will take on FW of existing controller. If newly installed controller is removed or shutdown during this time it may become inoperable.
8. Verify FW on new controller
<Ctrl>w (select Secondary Ctrlr) Main Menu -> View System Information
or using the CLI: sh inq
sccli> show redundancy
The StorEdge CLI will display progression of "Failed", "Scanning", "Detected" & "Enabled" states.
Do not update FW if array's controllers are in any state other than Enabled.
FIRMWARE UPGRADE:
If manual FW upgrade/downgrade is required, use sccli via a host connected to array. Follow instructions in 113722-17 for SE3310 arrays, and in 113730-03 for SE3320 arrays
Remember to upgrade the array SAFTE (SW included in Firmware patch)
If upgrading from 3.x to 4.x FW, follow instructions in Sun StorEdge 3000 Family RAID Controller Firmware Migration Guide.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Resume I/O activity, verify access to luns
