Goal

Replacing a Disk in the Common Array Manager (CAM)

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
Disk Drive Replacements are very common and are covered in great detail in
the Common Array Manager. 

***ATTENTION***
If you are replacing a disk that is one of these drive models:

ST330055SSUN300G
ST330055FSUN300G

AND the controller Firmware of the array is 7.x but not:

*6x40 Array 7.60.53.10 or later
*6x80 Array 7.60.53.10 or later
*FLX380 Array 7.60.53.10 or later
*25x0 Array 7.35.55.11 or later

please consult <DOCUMENT 1300555.1> to avoid a potential outage.

ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS
PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Disk drive has been determined as failed by the system


WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:

NOTE: If ASR is enabled, it should be deactivated temporarily before servicing the equipment so that additional unnecessary Service Requests are not created.

DEACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.10: ASR is automatically deactivated when you select "Reserve the tray for maintenance" in Service Advisor, and it is reactivated when you select "Release the tray from maintenance" in Service Advisor.

DEACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER: Before proceeding with the part replacement:

1. Log into CAM.
2. Go to "Storage Systems" -> [your arrayname] -> "Administration" -> "Array Health Monitoring".
3. Uncheck the box "Enable ASR for this array" under the section "Monitoring for This Array". If the box is already unchecked, there is no action required. Remember the status however, as it will matter in step 3 of REACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER below.
4. Click on "Save" if you have unchecked the box in step 3 above.

NOTE: If replacing a drive in a 6x80 array, it is recommended to use CAM 6.7 or later. Drives may not report properly in older versions of CAM SA for the 6x80 arrays.


1. Verify drive assignment.
a) If a HOT SPARE, Administrator will need to UNASSIGN it before proceeding. Failure to do so may result in an alarm of "Missing Hot Spare Drive". Please consult <DOCUMENT 1450121.1> if this occurs.  If the UNASSIGN function does not complete successfully, please contact Oracle for additional support.
b) If a SINGLE-DISK RAID 0, delete the volume before the disk is replaced. Please consult <DOCUMENT 1345746.1> for issues with missing volumes if they are not deleted before the disk replacement.  
2. Use the Service Advisor(SA) for the Array in question to review drive replacement directions. This will also instruct you on how
to toggle the drive location indicator for replacement. Use the indicator to locate the drive in question. The drive should also
be failed/faulted in the SA, Unless it is UNASSIGNED. If an assigned drive is not failed, contact Oracle Support or verify the reason for the drive replacement yourself.
NOTE: DO NOT FAIL AN UNASSIGNED DRIVE!!!
3. The drive location specified should be indicated by an amber fault LED for that Tray and Slot, as well as the white location LED
if available on that tray.
4. Remove the drive, and verify that the drive is the same or a valid substitute which may be a higher capacity drive:

a) type: SAS/SATA/FC/SSD
b) size  (New drive may be a higher capacity) 
c) RPM
NOTE: the drive make and model do not have to be the same, only the type, and RPM should in general be the same.
5. Replace the drive according to the instructions in the SA.
NOTE: If the drive firmware needs updating, the customer will have to schedule this at a later date, as a copy back is typically immediate.


OBTAIN ADMINISTRATOR ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
1. Verify with that the drive is in an OK or Optimal state.
2. Verify with that the Virtual Disk(VDisk) is reconstructing (if RAID 1,3,5,6). If it is not, you may need to manually start the reconstruction. See Reference Section.
3. Verify that all Alarms regarding drives bypassed, degraded drive channel, and impending failures have been removed from the system.
4. If the VDisk is a RAID 0, the volumes on the Vdisk will need to be deleted/recreated, or you can initialize the VDisk with the guidance of Oracle support.

REACTIVATING ASR with CAM 6.10: ASR is automatically deactivated when you select "Reserve the tray for maintenance" in Service Advisor, and it is reactivated when you select "Release the tray from maintenance" in Service Advisor. If ASR was not enabled before beginning this procedure, selecting "Release the tray from maintenance" will not activate it.

REACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER: After proceeding with the part replacement:

1. Log into CAM.
2. Go to "Storage Systems" -> [your arrayname] -> "Administration" -> "Array Health Monitoring".
3. Check the box "Enable ASR for this array" under the section "Monitoring for This Array". Do this ONLY if you unchecked the box in step 3 of DEACTIVATING ASR WITH CAM 6.9 OR EARLIER. If you found the box was unchecked, leave it unchecked now.
4. Click on "Save" if you have checked the box to reactivate ASR.

 

This section has been made internal. Initializing a VDisk requires the service password which is not available to customers. Reference Doc: Service Advisor Password for the Procedures under "Service Only" <DOCUMENT 1012627.1>

To Initialize a RAID 0 VDISK:
1. Revive the drive you just inserted through the UI or Service Advisor
2. Initialize the VDisk using the service command:

service -d <array_name> -c initialize -t <vdisk_name>

You will need to supply the Service password in order to complete this task.

The service command can be found in the following locations::

Solaris :  /opt/SUNWsefms/bin/service
Windows : C:\Program Files\Sun\Common Array Manager\Component\fms\bin\service.bat
Linux : /opt/sun/private/fms/bin/service

Example:

# ./service -d my_array -c initialize -t my_vdisk
Executing the initialize command on my_array

WARNING: Executing this command will irretrievably delete all data from this virtual disk's volumes!

Are you sure? (y/n) y
Enter the service password: service_password
Formatting Test_Volume
Completion Status: Success

This option was not available in the earliest versions of CAM. If this command fails, then the volumes must be deleted.

 

 

For exceptional cases it was reported that the command to UNASSIGN the HOT SPARE before replacement did not succeed, and that in such situation the FE had success when pulling the disk first and UNASSIGN it from the HOT SPARE role afterwards.
