How to remove and replace a Starcat System Controller CPU Board

Solution

CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: System Controller CPU Board

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?)

Starcat Training

TASK COMPLEXITY: 4

TIME ESTIMATE: 240 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

N/A

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Note: Before shutting down and replacing an SC make sure that clock from the other SC to all components is in a good state. To check this run "showboards -c" command for SMS 1.4 and later. ( See *Document ID: 1006413.1 Check clock status before replacement of System controller for more information )

If the affected SC is the spare goto step 6.

  1.  Powering Off a System Control (SC) Board

       1.  If this is the main SC ensure the spare sc is available.

       2.  Sync the main to the spare

sc% setdatasync backupIf no messages are reported in /var/opt/SUNWSMS/adm/platform/messages and the command completes, the setdatasync backup was successful.

       3.  As a superuser on the main SC, make a backup copy of the SMS configuration:

sc# smsbackup directory

       4.  From the main SC, failover (switch over) to the spare SC by typing:

sc% setfailover force

       5.  On the main SC, verify that it has assumed the main role and that failover is disabled by typing:

sc% showfailover -r
MAIN
sc% showfailover
SC Failover Status: DISABLED

       6.  On the main SC, disable the failover mechanism by typing:

sc% setfailover off

       7.  Verify the failover is DISABLED by typing:

sc% showfailover
SC Failover Status: DISABLED

       8.  Shutdown the spare sc:

sc_spare# shutdown -y -g seconds -i 0

       9.  Power off the spare (inactive) SC from the main SC by typing the following SMS command:

sc% poweroff scx

  2.  Removing the SC Board

  3.  Removing the System Controller CPU Board

       1.  Loosen the two (2) captive screws holding the system controller CPU to the SC board.
       2.  Remove the system controller CPU board by using the insert-eject levers on the board, and place the board on a flat sturdy ESD-protected surface with the component side up.

  4.  Memory boards should be transfered from the old board to the new.

  5.  Replace System Controller CPU Board.

  6.  Installing the System Control (SC) Board

       1.  Ensure any board alignment tabs are not bent.
       2.  Inspect the mating connector before inserting the new board.
       3.  Apply firm pressure on the front panel of the SC control carrier to connect with the connector on the centerplane support board.
       4.  Apply pressure to the top and bottom insert-eject levers simultaneously to ensure the board is properly seated.
       5.  reconnect IO Cables.

  7.  Verifying the new System Controller CPU Board.

       1.  Monitor the SCPost to ensure there are no errors.
       2.  From the OBP ensure the firmware is:
              1.  Othello ( CP2140 ) - 1.1.19.
              2.  Nordica ( CP1500 ) - 3.14.6
       3.  If the firmware is incorrect please see documents:
              1.  Othello ( CP2140 ) - 1010734.1
              2.  Nordica ( CP1500 ) - 1000816.1

       4.  Confirm that SMS sees the SC when powered on by typing the following SMS command:

sc% showboards -v |grep SC
SC0         On      SC         Spare         -          -
SC1         On      SC         Main          -          -
