Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED?
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure
TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 0
DELIVERY REQUIREMENT:
During a maintenance window
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT STATE SHOULD SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?
Use of Solaris FM commands such as :
# fmdump -v
# fmadm clear <UUID> if Solaris is the installed OS and if fmdump -v reports a faulty DIMM for the date of fault reported by the Customer/Sun Support engineer.
Check Maintenance LED on the front panel of the server. Is it lit ?
Also check BUI : component tab => does it report any FB DIMM fault ?
Also a clean shutdown is required. Leave this to the customer unless agreed otherwise.
WHAT ACTION DOES ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
0. Make sure it is possible to completely pull out the server out of its rack, if racked and remove network cables or optical fibers, as needed.
Best is to write down a simple wiring diagram prior to beginning replacement operation.
1. Shutdown of host, make sure host is powered off
2. Remove power cords
3. Pull out server
4. Remove top cover.
5. Locate FB DIMMs to be replaced.
*** IMPORTANT :
X4150 Server Service Required LED is lit if system detects a FB DIMM fault.
To use rear panel Locator button to identify faulty FB DIMMs:
A. Unplug all power cords from rear panel.
B. Press remind button
6.Remove concerned FB-DIMMs by pushing both edges at a slow pace. Place DIMMs even if faulty on ESD mate. Consider re-seating DIMMs first prior to actually replacing DIMMs in order to make sure DIMMs are really faulty
7. Make sure new DIMMs are same p/n as removed ones.
8. Make sure of their positioning (pay attention to the "nodge" of both FB DIMMs and Mainboard)
9. Evenly and gently press down DIMM into its slots. Should a "resistance" occur, DO NOT FORCE ! Remove DIMM, check nodge, check p/n & retry step 8.
10. Replace top cover, push in server into its racks, reconnect all unplugged cables and then
11. Put back in place power cords.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
1. Best is to fully monitor BIOS startup to make sure all expected memory is present.
2. Bootup OS
3. If OS is Solaris, check fmadm/fmdump command outputs
4. Check total memory available and monitor error logs to check any new memory error messages
5. Optional : check BUI : check component tabs. Clear any previously reported FBDIMMs fault, should there be any remaining fault. Observe event log to monitor any eventual new error message appearance.
PARTS NOTE:
DIMM come always in pair. Also, check p/n as it is not permitted to mix different part numbers inside same DIMM group. Also check memory installations rules.
