FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4150, X4250 CPU Heatsink needs replacement
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Requires a complete shutdown and poweroff of the servers.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
It is a good idea to have an estimation of CPU temperatures prior to replacing its heatsink.
If OS is Solaris : # prtdiag -v
Otherwise connect onto BUI (SP ILOM) and browse information tab to get an idea of CPU temperatures.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
A. Removal of old heatsink
1. Prepare the server for service.
1.a. Power off the server.
1.b. Disconnect the power cords.
1.c. Slide the server out of the rack.
1.d. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
1.e. Remove the top cover.
2. Remove the heatsink on top of the failed processor (Make sure of CPU location !)
3. Clean off the old thermal interface material from the heatsink and processor,
using the supplied alcohol wipe.
B. Installation of new heatsink
1. Using the supplied grease syringe, empty the syringe on to the processor in a
star shaped pattern.
2. Smooth the grease into a thin even layer on top of the processor.
You can use a piece of plastic bag over your finger.
3. Orient the heatsink so that the two screws line up with the mounting studs
4. Tighten the screws alternately one 1/2 turn until fully seated.
C. Final steps
1. Install the top cover.
2. Install the server into the rack.
3. Reconnect the power cord (or cords) to the power supply (or supplies).
4. Power on the server.
